Yellow Mountain Imports Shogi Japanese Chess Game Set - Wooden Board with Drawers and Traditional Koma Playing Pieces

I learned Shogi while in high school and haven't played in 50 years. What a surprise to learn my 17 year old grandson apparently learned on the internet! We still haven't completed a game since when we start at family gatherings we get interrupted-- but if you like chess and don't know this game I recommend you learn. It's the kind of game you could play every day. Not some weird variation of chess but a great game in its own right. This set is solid and you'll never need to buy another one.

I think many people would have given this set 4 stars or less due to some of the complaints with the piece sizes, but honestly the fact that the King is a bit too big really isn't that much of issue. Also, my interaction with the seller was amazing. Their response time was great and just a pleasure. All in all, if you don't want to spend hundreds or even thousands for a "real" Japanese Shogi set, this set is beautiful and is excellent value for the money. Oh, and the little booklet is great! As I'm still learning, it's perfect to have there to see how the pieces move.

Gave this to a wonderful weeb in my life, and they loved this board for making them feel like they're in an anime. Good, quality board and pieces with a storage drawer. Need a board to produce that satisfying "clack" when triumphantly promoting your pawn to gold? Look no further.

The board is excellent quality and looks really nice, enough so that I can leave it on the coffee table as a centerpiece.The pieces are light and moveable. The kanji on one of them isn't perfect so it's kind of hard to read but that's mostly because I can't read kanji!Packaging was great! It was double boxed with bubble wrap inside the first box and styrofoam protecting the table inside the second. (It actually got dropped and there's no damage at all)Definitely worth purchasing for anybody looking to get into Shogi.

It came with all the pieces needed to play the game, so that is always a plus. This came with 20 Pawns (2 extra I guess), 2 rooks, 2 bishops, 4 lances, 4 knights, 4 silvers, 4 golds, a king, and an opposing king. The board is pretty neat, and feels great! The instructions are straight forward.My issue with this set is the quality of the pieces. The pieces are poorly cut, like pieces do not match in size nor shape, and the print on one of my golds were smudged, and the triangular edge of one of the pieces were clearly cut off to make a hexagon not a pentagon shape of shogi pieces.Not bad if you want to pick up shogi, but they could do better to improve the quality of the pieces so that they fit the board.UPDATE!!! Having used the board multiple times, I took notice that the drawer has a set of magnets on them to help the drawer self close shut into the board. Definitely a nice feature. They really made great effort to put as much quality into the board.

I bought this shogi for my husband' birthday gift.My husband and I never played shogi before but, we read the instruction that came with and played a few times.It's very fun game!Instruction(Ebglish) shows very basic rules, how to play, how to move pieces and how to read.Shogi board is not too small and not too big, it was perfect size for just getting started.We watched a few You Tube videos to get understand more details.I think shogi pieces are little big, some of them don't fit perfect in the square space.Every time I place them on the board, I always hit another pieces.So, you kinda have to fix pieces all the time.There is a long slide-style box inside the shogi board which you can keep your pieces.I wish it had both sides separately , so each player can have own box.But, it has only one long box.Quality of wood is OK. It'll be nice gift for beginner.There are two extra pieces for Pawn (Fuhyo).So far, we really enjoy this product :D

My nephew wanted to learn to play this so we invested in it. He loves it and can't wait to learn more.
