Great for all ages
I bought this about three months ago. Our 9 and 12 year olds love it. They prefer it to watching on a TV screen because they can lay on the bed or wherever and watch just want they want. The SDVD1030 is so reasonably priced I got two. So no fighting between the two kids over what to watch. Each takes a unit and goes off to watch what they want.I got one for my mom (in her 80's) who does not like to deal with electronics or changing input mode on her TV. She also loves it. Just pop in a cd, dvd, or flash drive or SD card with photos, and they all run easily. And the 10" screen is great for older eyes. The battery lasts a long time. Five hours seems about right. The sound is good for watching it 12" to 18" from your face, but in a noisy environment you do need headphones or an external speaker. But then, you need to crank up a regular TV/dvd player if a lot of noise is going on in the room as well. The sound is pretty good for this portable dvd player's purpose.I just bought one for an older friend who also is not tech friendly. This just works right out of the box.The USB and SD inputs make it so flexible for type of media/file you want to view.It is light weight, but well made. No problems yet with the use/light abuse that 9 and 12 year olds give it around the house. The kids like the swivel screen. And I think it would be useful for someone who doesn't have a lot of mobility and needs to watch it sitting in a chair or laying in bed. This is a fine product at a great price--which is why I continue to buy this product when a portable dvd player is needed.UPDATE: I was asked about the files recognized on SD cards and USB drives. Here's what I found. Both the SD card and USB drive play mpg video files with no problem. The USB drive played vob with no problem, the SD card had difficulty playing it smoothly--the sound was choppy. Interestingly, the video part of 3gp files play but not the audio.MP3 audio and JPG photo files also play well. Wav and bmp were not recognized.Taking the card out of my camera and putting it in works well with the jpgs but not the mov or avi files.

After 18 months of abuse, it still looks and runs great!
This thing has taken some extreme toddler abuse and still looks great and runs great. I bought this 18 months ago, when my child was still 2 years old, she is now 3. At over 30 pounds, she jumped up and down on it when it was folded over screen side up like a tablet, and it kept on running, without a skipping a beat. She gets all kinds of crud on it and I use Windex (sometimes original, sometimes multi-surface) and paper towels to clean it off. I'm posting a photo I took today, after all of this abuse, because it still looks great! I am so impressed with this thing, that I'm giving it 5 stars even though it has a couple annoying features, like the volume control. If it weren't for the annoying features, it would earn far more than 5 stars, so let's consider that the annoying features keep it at 5 stars. The picture is great. Sound is fine, better than what some of the other reviews say. We can sit 4 feet away and still hear and see it just fine. My toddler thinks it's super cool, because it looks like a tablet when it's swiveled around and folded down. She carries it all around and drops it on tile, no problem. The versatile stand is great for a multitude of viewing positions. She pushes all of the buttons and pops out the disk while it's running, and this thing is like a puppy that begs for more rough play.

So far, so good
Seems to work fine. Use it for about one film a day.The little remote is essential for fine tuning such as brightness and contrast ( you really have to second guess what buttons double up on functions).I gave this 4 stars because there are no volume controls on the remote, as well as the manual volume using the "stop" button for volume reduction- sometimes I press the button and the volume reduces speedily, other times the whole movie stops and I have to repeat from the beginning. a real 50-50 chance on that. This unit works great with headphones! with my particular ear spuds, captured surround effect quite well- that was a nice surprise:-)I do like the fact that unlike a laptop, you can fold the whole top down and it wont stop playing until you manually turn it to off- this is good if you need to angle the screen low, or need to fold down for a moment.Very lightweight..if Im watching something, I can easily tote around to another room- doesn't feel like the screen is going to topple over when I set it down either.I probably wouldn't take this camping, but I definitely would for a long flight. For the price, not bad so far :-)
