Storytelling at its finest!
What does one mean by being a hero ...Does that hero have no negative aspects then why would the fate for celebrated Heroes like Jason, Theseus, Hercules be so damned! Totally loved the stories of Hercules and Poseidon...The Argonauts, Opedius made me cringe and the way the Minotaur was conceived is mind boggling. The second book is recommended to anyone who wants an interesting read and stay mesmerized by the wit and tragedy of the Heroes.

Mythology was never so much fun!
I have always been fascinated by Greek mythology and Heroes by Stephen Fry was too good to pass. This is unlike any other text I have ever read on the subject! Stephen Fry has delightfully retold the stories of the well known heroes Perseus, Heracles, Jason, Oedipus and Theseus, and the somewhat obscure - for me, at least - Bellerophon, Atalanta, and Orpheus. Fry's narrative is funny, fast-paced, and hugely entertaining - especially the reimagined dialogues and the quirky footnotes. Understandably, many of the episodes from the lives of these heroes have been described only briefly due to the vast scope of this undertaking; each of the heroes is worth a separate book of his / her own. But the brevity does not affect the fun in any manner, and the reader is treated to an unconventionally engaging insight into the world of whimsical gods, fearsome monsters and heroic mortals undertaking fantastic quests. Adding to the fun are the excellent illustrations, ranging from millennia old archaeological pieces to centuries old artistic masterpieces. Though it will not serve the purpose of serious readers looking for a detailed account of the heroes, this book will appeal to those readers who wish to get introduced to Greek mythology in a light-hearted way. I enjoyed it a lot!

Having enjoyed Mythos: The Greek Myths Retold so much, I had high hopes for the 2nd volume and was not disappointed. Stephen Fry does an amazing job of making the Greek myths relatable to a modern audience whilst preserving what makes them mythic and epic, inspirational and cautionary, funny and tragic. As per last time, I had both the audiobook and Kindle versions, listening mainly to the narration and reading a few pages here and there when it was more convenient. My knowledge of characters such as Heracles, Jason, Theseus, Oedipus, Icarus etc was fairly minimal so I learned a lot of interesting detail about them all and met some characters I'd never heard of. I really appreciated the author's additional notes on how various sources contradict each other on timelines and which supporting characters were (or weren't) involved in certain events. It's the nature of such myths to have become a little muddled over so many centuries, and masterfully done to thread them together in a way that makes a reasonable amount of sense to a modern reader. The footnotes were yet again a rich vein of information regarding how more words, phrases and concepts have survived into English (and Latin) to this day; from everyday phrases, to taxonomy of animals and birds, to the constellations we still see in the night sky. I especially enjoyed the snarky note about Freud taking none of the actual content from the story of Oedipus. It seems the man was never one to let facts get in the way of his so-called theories! An excellent instalment and I will definitely be on to Troy at some point in future.
