I have been playing drums since 1973, and I still have to work on the basic techniques. Jeff Johnson was able to capture the nuances of dynamic playing in this book. The drummer is a musician, a fact that many young drummers often miss. This will be a vital part of my music library

This drumming method book addresses most needed fundamental motor skills.
This book is a must study for all dedicated serious drummers and a prerequisite to studying rudiments. This book indirectly accelerates understanding of bounce and wrist control.

Great Book
This book really helps to explain the natural approach to drumming. I have been teaching this method for years and I'm happy to see someone finally document it.

A great asset for teachers and students a like!!
For those who had the chance to study with Joe Morello, he was an extraordinary teacher and one of the great drum teachers of the twentieth century. Having studied with George Lawrence Stone, he further developed Stone's ideas into his Master Studies Volumes I and II. Stones Accents and Rebounds is dedicated to Joe whose idea to add accents to Stick Control was the inspiration for the book. In his book, The Level System, Jeff Johnson outlines the Stone/Morello technique in a clear and thoughtful manner. The Level System categorizes the four strokes that Joe Morello taught and demonstrates how to apply this technique to create accents and dynamic changes with clear examples and exercises. Jeff's careful outlining of the proper execution of rudiments is one of the added benefits of his book, as also his application of the technique to drum set grooves. The Level System is a great book for learning Joe Morello's technique, and also a great tool for teachers. It acts as a great companion to Joe's Master Studies series or the study of rudimental snare drumming. I am glad to see that Jeff has shared his lessons with Joe Morello in this outstanding book.
