Are these parts compatible with both active and passive pickups?

The pickups supplied with an LC-10 Kit are of a Passive Design. To transform the electronics included to an Active System several modifications would be necessary including the replacement of perhaps the potentiometers and other related components. Fortunately, because this is a kit, the options available to the builder are limited only by imagination and budget. With some study and creativity, the purchaser could utilize the major parts of the kit (excluding the electronics) and purchase a variety of after-market electronics that will help create an Active System.

How would you compare its sound to other $200 guitars like maestro, oscar schmidt etc? i'm unable to audition.

I love my Saga guitar kits. I have two and the LC-10 is my favorite. I play it all the time and have made several recordings using it. The only modification I did was I changed the tuners. I would say that it's as good as any $ 400 - $ 500 guitar out there.

what are the hole sizes on the head of the guitar?

I agree they must be a standard size. I installed Steinberger tuners on mine and they fit great. I love this guitar. I play it more than any other guitar I own.
