Wish I had when I was a kid...
Between this and the swedish fire steel, I really wish I had this stuff when I was a kid camping...Been having rain and flooding in this area the last few days (and 5 tornados in this part of the state two nights ago) so everything outside is wet, wet, wet. So I pulled some junk from around where I was putting in new grass after landscaping (have a lot of straw laying around) and played with the fire steel and one of these, to test things out. It took me a little bit to get the best motion on the fire steel, but when I did, and used some of this to start things off, I was amazed at how well it worked.Got it started well, and it was a consistent and hot enough blaze to quickly dry out the straw I had near it that started wet, and was able to get that going, and eventually a decent little fire, despite everything starting out wet when I first hunkered down in the back yard.So if you're a camper or just someone who loves doing campfires, this is a great product.I saw reviews with people talking about vaseline and cotton balls and such, but for me, my time is well worth the buck or whatever one of these costs. Its not like I'm doing 5 fires a day and it really does become a noticeable savings to make my own, so I'm more than happy paying for a product that is this good at doing what it says it does.

Gear that can save your life
I led 9 women on a backpacking trip and we spent 3 days in the rain. The temps weren't too cold but we wanted a fire nonetheless. Everthing was wet, all wood around us, but I told the ladies if they'd gather me some twigs, I'd give it a go with the tinder I brought. It was a GAME CHANGER. It isn't like other wet tinder I've used in the past. It doesn't JUST burn. It was shooting a flame so high, the twigs caught easily. We were able to get a solid base going and we kept a fire going (IN THE RAIN) for 2 days. From now on this will be a must have piece of gear in my backpack.

Worth every penny
These little things are awesome. I shaved half of one into a pile, soft scraped my ferro rod twice, and then struck the rod. Almost instantly a 12”-16” flame arose that gradually shrunk over the course of almost 5 minutes. That’s using just half. I consider each of these good for lighting 2 fires and I live in a very wet climate. Haven’t field tested or drenched it in water yet, but based on the texture (similar to a bar of soap), and the name, I’m pretty sure it’ll do just fine.

Yellow packaged ust werfire is garbage!
The UST wetfire in the white packaging is what you want. It is lightweight, small, individually wrapped in strong thick plastic and sealed well. Works extremely well and does not have any odor. The yellow ust wetfire packages are garabage. The packaging must be eco friendly because you can pretty much see thru them and Im sure a strong wind could open the individual packages. Wouldnt know for sure tho because every individual package in the 12 pk was opened along the whole back seam. No shelf life for opened packages. Whether thats from the machine not sealing them right or from them just popping open from the weak plastic packaging in transit is anyones guess. And lastly, even if the packages were sealed, the amount of petroleum these were doused in is overwhelming and unlike the white ust wetfire packages. And the weak see thru yellow packaging does not keep any of that smell in the package. Once you touch the package your hands reek like you just spilled aladdin heating oil all over your hands. Just ridiculous and nothing you would want to take with you, especially hunting.Oh and the yellow cubes are 3-4 times the size of the good ust wetfire in the white packaging too. Not bad, just not as lightweight and easy to travel with like the ust wetfire cubes in white packaging.Yellow packaged ust wetfire = horribleWhite packaged ust wetfire = good, its what you want

Does NOT come packaged as shown.
Comes in miniature ziploc style bags (*not* what's shown) and current packaging style DOES let the fuel smell through the plastic. I had the original that were packaged properly and they didn't smell at all. These? These are going to smell wherever you put them. I double/triple bagged them and they seem ok for keeping in the odor. The utility of these is unmatched -- they work incredibly well and it's worth the fiddling IMHO. But I do wish they'd get their packaging thing fixed. Original packaging (what they show in photos) was much more durable too.

Have Used For Years - Very Good For Fire Starting
I have used WetFire tinder for many years as a means to start a fire in the woods, or at home. It's easy to shave a little bit amongst other tinder, and get more material going. With any kind of spark or ember, I can get a flame more consistently with WetFire shavings than from any other commonly carried tinder (charred cloth, cotton balls with Vaseline in candle wax, birch bark, magnesium shavings, tinder fungus or dryer lint). I can often get a flame from a single strike of a flint. There have been a few exceptions, but never more than three strikes. The variance seems to be from tab to tab. I'll have one tab, from which shavings always light on the first strike. I'll have another tab, from which shavings always take two or three strikes. I'll get these inconsistencies from new batches, and old batches. Age doesn't seem to be the issue, as I've had the same variances from brand new packs and 2-year old packs. Out of a pack of eight tabs, there's always one - rarely two - that doesn't catch alight as fast as the others. Still, that's far more dependable than other tinder types. That said, I never go without AT LEAST TWO - often three - different types of tinder (in an emergency "one is zero, two is one, three is two, etc."). I've been quite pleased with WetFire tinder for many years, and I'll continue to use it as my first tinder source - but I'll always have a backup.
