The Sabian Symbols in Astrology: Illustrated by 1000 Horoscopes of Well Known People

This is an edit to a earlier review which I gave 1 star as being illogical and nonsequitor. I still was seeking a degree symbol book. The others I read were too frivolous, inane and unprofessional. I reordered the erudite Dr. Jones book, and the more I studied the vignettes, the less illogical and non sequitor it was. You have to continue to study and assimilate the material. Accurate and very professional. Recommend.

I just received my copy and while it seems like an informative book (although totally over my head) I must have missed something in the description. I thought since it said "Sabian Symbols", the book would have, you know... symbols. I was expecting images I could look at and ponder, with descriptions as to the intended meaning. If anyone knows if such a thing exists, an accompanying book or cards? with pictures of the symbols could you please add a comment to let me know about it. This looks more like a reference book, or sort of a modern-day I Ching. Someone might be laughing their head off thinking, "What, she thought The Sabian Symbols were actually symbols? Bwhahahaha!" but... yeah, I did. I have slightly more than a lay person's understanding of astrology, had heard about these, so researched a bit ant decided to give it a try. From the looks of it, I may be at it for a few years to learn to use it.

People sell this book for fifty bucks or more. It's a reference books. I bought six of them when they first came out, and all six are stolen over the years. It's descriptions of scenes - like paintings - the the scenes correspond to degrees of the zodiac. I agree that it's meaningful to read the paragraphs that correspond to the sign and degree you have planets in.This book is useful. If you can find it inexpensively, as I finally did, it is an amazing gift for a friend who is interested in astrology. I am more interested in the scenes, now that I have already done the comparisons to my chart.

Dr. Jones treatment is the most insightful look into humanity. His word use is superb, that is, he commands attention with each sentence as he details the application of the symbols to human development. Since studying the astrology subject from 1978 to present, his series of books best describes humanity's march from infant to adult with selfhood, responsibilty, and human interfacing highlighted.

... for a 1st book on the subject, I would recommend this version. The author includes chapters on: "planets & character traits", "Rectification using Symbols", & info on using them for daily guidance (by using the Symbol for the sunrise degree). They can be used w/ Horary charts as well. If you've no book on the Sabian Symbols, definitely try this one.

This is a great addition to an astrology library, but by no means will this teach you astrology. Also, each days entry must be viewed and interpreted with a very open-mind. This is a book of analogies, and has almost a poetic feel to it. I enjoy this book, but its not for everyone.

This book is not easy to read. The language employed in the actual descriptions of the Sabian Symbols is somewhat cryptic. As an astrologer, I find it hard to base my Sabian Symbol interpretations on this particular book. It takes substantial period of time to tune into the symbols intuitively, unlike the rest of astrological practice, this area is especially intuitive. After having read this book, I hesitate to include Sabian Symbols from my chart reports.
