Devils (Wordsworth Classics)

It's a challenging read, to say the least.
I have spent nearly five months reading Devils. I'll finish the final 50 pages by tomorrow. At 700 pages it is marathon. The book is character rich and the complicated Russian names are a challenge as well. The subject matter is quite parallel to 2024 world events. Read the book with a sharp pencil and a highlighter for notations and emphasis. This is my fourth Dostoyevsky novel in the past 18months.

Dostoevsky is Above and Beyond Gogol
I started reading Russian novels, mainly Dostoevsky, in 2020. After the "Karamsov Brothers," I thought I'd take a deture and read Gogol's "Dead Souls" before reading "Devils." Gogol was not impressive in the least! I could barely get halfway through it before I just gave up. And I HATE not finishing a book!So far, "Devils" is a classic Dostoevsky novel, that I am enjoying.

My favorite novel by F
My favorite novel by F.D. - not knowing any Russian, I am in no position to comment further. Really enjoyed the preface which gave me the historical context.

Beautiful Book
The cover of the book isn't the one that's advertised. That's ok because the cover was absolutely beautiful. I love this book. I hope to do business with this seller again.

Too much untranslated French. What did you say?
Normally, I love Wordsworth Classics. They are so affordable, and are everything a paperback needs to be when you just want to read the literature with less fluff. This time around is different because in this book one of the characters speaks a lot of French. A lot. It is not translated. There are no footnotes.Dostoevsky's characters speak in such an indirect way which make every statement important in some paragraphs, and you can lose the plot for a long time when you have no idea what all this disconnected statements mean. You can easily lost the gist of what they are communicating.Wordsworth needs to fix this by putting a warning on the advertising of this book, or by adding footnotes, which I know would be a lot, and increase the size of the book, but what's the alternative? The alternative is you are like me, and cannot even enjoy the book anymore because of how many critical sentences are in arcane French. Plus, I don't even like France, random, I know.

Unauthorized cover.
The cover shown is a composite using the images of actors from a theatre productions nothing to do with this title. I seriously doubt it was used with their permission or that of the theatre companies. I also doubt they received any compensation. If so, the cover shown needs to be removed.
