Great Cargo Box for our 2200 mile Adventure
We bought this to use on my 2017 Subaru Outback for our 2200 mile, 4 day road trip when we recently moved from CA to IL. It was easy to install, and fit on the crossbars perfectly. It was fairly lightweight too. I drove with it on my car for about 3 weeks while it was empty, prior to our trip, even though I know I wasn't supposed to, and it was fine (all local roads, no highways though). It held all 3 of our suitcases plus some pillows and blankets. It was a huge help for storage during the drive since my car was packed, as I had two 30 inch pet cages in the back with our 4 cats in them. We moved in December, so we were bound to encounter some sort of weather, and boy did we! On day 3 of our drive we were headed into a huge snow storm that spanned about 600 miles, which was to be our whole trip for that day. We wound up going north and out of our way to avoid driving in the snow storm all day, but we still drove in it for about 6 hours. It held up great, and the inside stayed dry even though the outside did get a good amount of snow and ice on it. There were a few hours where the roads made the drive really bumpy due to all of the ice and snow covering the ground, and it didn't budge or loosen up at all (we checked to ensure it was still secure every night when we stopped at our hotels). I was averaging driving about 65 - 74 mph during the entire trip, and it didn't seem to be a problem. My husband was driving his car behind me the whole time, and he said when I went over about 75 mph he noticed that it would shake and bounce around more, so I tried to stay below that (but honestly I went up to 80 mph at times when passing a truck for example). I noticed that on the 2 lane highways whenever a semi truck would pass me going the opposite way, my whole car would shake and I was really worried that the lock would break or that the cargo box would go flying off my car, but it held up great and did it's job. I would often slide the cover for my sun roof open so that I could check on it and see the bottom of the cargo box from through the glass, and I noticed that it would bounce slightly as I was driving from the wind but again I was going about 70 mph most of the time so that was expected, and it didn't cause any problems. I did not notice any wind noise at all, however I did get about 5 mph less average gas mileage than usual. It was very sturdy and got us and all of our stuff to our destination. I am happy to have it now for any future road trips, and would definitely recommend it as an inexpensive, sturdy cargo box.

Great assist! (Note the lift direction)
I was able to fit four full-sized cots, mats, a tent, and plenty of sheets and blankets in this cargo bin. It was great—easy to install on my 2015 Pathfinder- and just as easy to take down after the trip. It stayed secure during a two-hour highway drive and back with no issues. Notes: The bin opens back to front, which can make accessing the cargo lock a little tricky (a stool or bucket helps). However, this design actually makes installation and removal of the bin easier, and it allows loading supplies from either side, which was very convenient. The locking latch and hinges don’t feel the most durable. That said, the latch stayed secure for our entire trip, and since we only plan to use this once or twice a year, it is fine for us. If you plan to use a cargo bin frequently, you might want to consider investing in a higher-end model. But for casual users who want something spacious, easy to install, and reasonably priced, the SportsRack XL is an excellent option.

Worked for me.
I researched a bunch of different cargo boxes and ultimately decided upon this one. I felt like it wasn't too cheap and it wasn't too expensive while also having a whole bunch of space. I needed to move from Minnesota to North Carolina so I drove quite a ways with it. It was strange and a little nerve wrecking the first couple times I drove with it on but I never came across any issues. I also drove through some rain (nothing major) and all my stuff stayed dry in it.. It comes with some stickers to cover the screw holes that are not in use so no water leaks in but if it was packed too much to where it bulges in the middle I could see some water possibly being able to flow in the sides but as I said I had no problems with water. The plastic material its made out of is indeed not the strongest but it certainly seemed strong enough for what it was built for. I've seen some reviews saying you can push the sides in and that you can't sit on it without it collapsing and that's true but it's not a bench and wasn't made to be pushed in - it holds things INSIDE perfectly. I stored a shop fan, exercise equipment, a vacuum cleaner, clothes, blankets, and other random stuff in it with room to spare. It says to not exceed 70MPH but I drove up to 80-90 MPH and it did great. I could hear it when driving at high speeds but the noise was not unbearable.. I could hold a conversation over it just fine and when I played music at the volume I prefer I couldn't hear it at all. All in all I've driven over 1500 miles with this and continue to be happy with my purchase. I would recommend this to anyone who needs a huge reliable cargo box and doesn't want to spend $500+ on the Thule brand. CONS- Not the strongest lock. Doesn't open very wide so it might be difficult to pack certain things. The hinges are slightly weak. Slows down vehicles (as to be expected). May be loud.. mixed reviews on that (was tolerable for me) PROS- ENORMOUS! Water proof (for me). Affordable.

Great roof top box!
Excellent roof top cargo box. Worked will with our 2023 Subaru Outback on a 2000+ mile roadtrip. No issues whatsoever. Once secured to the roof rails it didn't move, and fit more cargo than expected. Some points to consider: the lock is very basic and could be easily broken into. We ended up taking our duffle bags out of the box at night on our overnight stop, and keeping them inside the car. Another thing to consider is that it is rather hard to access without a step stool of some kind. I'm 6'4" and had some difficulty reaching it. I bought a collapsible step stool online and it worked great. Even with these minor issues, I still highly recommend it. It was also funny to see other cars with the exact same cargo box. I believe we saw at least 4 other people on the road with the same model. Definitely worth checking out.

Perfect topper for trips and moves! Worked like a dream!
We got this for some extra space on a move and I am so glad we did. It worked amazingly, and obviously was ever so much better than the old nylon topper we had used some years back. Here is why this is a great topper: 1. It is a decent price for a hard top. Free shipping is a bonus, too! 2. It is pretty sturdy, especially considering the price. Not so sure it could take a falling rock or anything but aside from a similar sort of accident this topper seems like it will be around for awhile. 3. Despite being pretty sturdy, this guy is pretty light and my boyfriend easily lifted it onto our Subaru Forester. This means one person can install the thing, as long as they are of reasonable strength, though due to the size I would recommend two installers for most people. 4. It is super easy to install. The directions pretty much tell you all you need to know and they are encompassed in part of a single sheet of paper. 5. Although we didn't drive through any downpours, there was a day with steady and light rain on our trip. The topper kept all the contents inside safe and dry. It's not a perfect waterproof seal and there are holes (the ones you don't use for the installation on whichever kind of car you have) and the holes are sealed with stickers. I don't know how long the stickers will last but I figure I can always get new (and maybe better ones) when they die. 6. On our Subie this was barely noticeable while driving. It's quiet, light, aerodynamic and didn't seem to dramatically alter my gas mileage, though when we loaded it up, the car up and toted the 4x8 Uhaul trailer the mileage obviously dropped quite a bit. 7. The delivery was a breeze. Again, it was free with Prime. They set a date, confirmed the date would work for me and then they called me when they were ~15 minutes from my home. They were polite and professional. 8. It's Amazon, so I have confidence that if something goes wrong they will help make it right. Nothing went wrong for me, and the topper seems like it will last a good long time with care, so if you are on the fence perhaps give it a try knowing Amazon is a great company to buy from. 9. It's really quite spacious. We fit a couple duffel bags of clothes, a large down comforter, three paintings, some towels, a large yoga cushion, two memory foam queen bed pillows and a floor lamp in ours. There was still space, but we had no need for it and didn't want to put too much weight up top for handling. 10. I loved having the lock. When traveling with the soft topper I always worried about leaving the car unattended. While I still don't recommend leaving your car in a bad situation with this hard topper, it feels so much safer and I think in most situations the lock will deter thieves. With the soft topper we always had to remove it each night as it simply felt too risky. That was a pain in the tooshie! And having this topper made hotel stays a much more pleasant experience. All in all I highly recommend this topper. The price is right compared to other hard tops. The item performs well, seems sturdy and it is relatively easy to take on and off. If you have any questions please let me know and I will try to answer! Hope this helped! Best of luck!

Excellent budget choice for road trippers
Bought this box (XL) for 3000 mile road trip. It did exceptionally well and survived extreme rain, extreme heat and wind under full load conditions. Definitely would recommend. A piece of advice (not this box specific, but in general) - have a ladder handy because loading and unloading this on an SUV is challenging. Pros: - size - we were able to fit 2 full suitcases, 1 carry-on and a bunch of sleeping bags, smaller bags etc - durability (survived 3000 mile road trip going from southern US to the lakes and back). We went through a couple of very heavy storms - the box did great, no leakage inside) - aerodynamic - only minor effect on our MPG Cons - these are not really cons, but more of concerns that we had before the trip, however the box survived well despite them - Installation was ok, but our crossbars were too wide for it so I had to drill additional holes for the brackets. - only one lock in the back of the box, I wish it had additional clamps or straps. I've seen people on the road wrapping this exact box with a strap. Although we didn't need this on our trip, I will incorporate this for future. - feels a little flimsy, but again it didn't affect the performance. Getting large suitcases out of it was tricky as resting them on the side of the box bent it a little.

Durable Car roof box
My husband and I mounted this thing for a trip that we are going to take. The next day, we went to a doctor's appointment in east LA, and entered a parking structure with extremely low clearance. woops! We heard this guuurr-- uf .... then we would drive a few yards ... then there would be a gurrrrr --- uf then drive a few yards , then gurrrr -- ufff .... you get the idea. Basically we were stuck there, in the middle of a parking structure, at the medical school at USC ... I was basically ready to kiss 400 something bucks goodbye. When we finally made it home, we did a thorough inspection in the daylight, to see if any of it penetrated the top of the shell. I was amazed. There was not a single hole. There was a huge dent though, but one solid punch undented it. My husband went out on this dewey December morning to see if any moisture had entered the cabin, and he said that it was completely dry. So Yes, that is another plus. My only disadvantage is that it unlocks from the back. I simply can not access it. I am not tall enough. We are either going to have to move the crossbars way over or do something about the antenna or I don't know what. This container only holds around 100 lbs. It is good for holding blankets and some sporting goods. Just don't overdo it.

Didn't experience what everyone else has so far.
I bought this topper because of the extremely good reviews. But I was unfortunately disappointed. First of all the topper did not fit my 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Limited. In the defense of SportRack this was mostly problem with the car. There were only 3 settings that I could set my racks to on the roof and the closest together I could get them was still not close enough. So leaving in 3 days I did not have time to find and order another one so drilled new holes in the topper to make it fit. Take that for what you will. If you want to say that all of the problems following were because of that then so be it but I fail to see how that has any affect on what happened next. At that point I was still happy with the purchase. Installation was very easy. I left it on the roof for about a week to just test it out before hitting the road for a 2500 mile road trip. No issues driving around town. When I went to load that thing the night before is when I started getting frustrated. The lock didn't unlock very easily and required me to pull back on the plastic to get it to release. I also had to leave the keys in which weighed it down. This really exacerbated the extremely weak support arms. They would not stay up for the life of me. Anytime I would bump the box the weak sides would give and the support arms would drop the lid. Very frustrating. I also did not like the rear load that everyone is raving about. There is no way to reach the front of the topper and therefore you have to get a step ladder and move it to the side to move items up front. Then you have to move the step ladder to the other side to get the items up in the front on the other side. I had to get to step ladders and leave them on each side. I was constantly going up one ladder then the other. Not fun. The opening of the topper is not conducive to fitting 18 inch tall items. I was trying to fit a 15 inch tall tub and I had to slide it in sideways and even then it barely fit. Again the sides gave way as I was trying to squeeze it in. I was careful not to over pack the topper and the one heavy container (35 to 40 LBs) I put up there I put directly on one of the racks. I loaded lifevest, foldable chairs and some towels in trash bags. I used the stickers to cover the remaining holes. Once loaded and closed I thought that it might work. The next day we departed on our trek from Texas to Minnesota. Anyone that has driven this knows there's long sections across flat plains with wind and 80 MPH sections of I29. Before we could even get to Oklahoma my parents who were driving in a different car called and said something was getting sucked out of the topper. So I pulled over and one of the trash bags had gotten sucked thru the opening. Can't be very water tight if that's happening. I removed the trash bag and we continued on our way. But as we approached interstate highway speeds (75-80 MPH) again I was called by my parents stating the topper top was separating from the bottom. Using my mirror you can see the picture my wife snapped of what it looked like. Top should be completely covering the bottom and instead there is a 1 inch gap. That's not very water tight either. So I stopped and put 2 bungee cords over the top. Pretty raggety if you ask me even for the "cheap" cost of $300. I'm glad I did because 100 miles later it poured and I mean poured. My items did stay dry as far as I know but I did not unpack them until a day later when we arrived in Minn. That was not even the worst of my problems. The most frustrating one (and the only problem one can debate may have been caused by the misfit of the topper) was that when I got to interstate speeds and a little gust of wind would kick up the topper would begin to bounce. Anyone that knows anything about aerodynamics knows that the shape of this thing is similar to a wing. So the topper would lift slightly and when the gust hit it and a I'd hit a bump it would just start banging on the top of the car. When I would slow down there would be no problem. But do you understand how frustrating it is to take a 2500 mile trip with a 10 month old and a four year old and have to drive 15+ MPH under the posted speed limit? If you don't I'll tell you....IT BLOWS. My 10 month old puked all over before we even go to the highway. We had to change him 5 times the first day of driving. I'm not talking diapers, I'm talking outfits because he soiled them thru. I did not need this added distraction. I was constantly watching in the mirror to see just how fast I could get to before it started flapping around. Luckily the hardware held and I didn't push it too hard so it made the trip both ways. There were definitely bugs all over inside the topper and the little stickers to cover the holes didn't last. Lastly, and not the toppers fault but on the way home a hotel we stopped at had only a parking garage...Good luck parking there with this thing on top. Pros: It is big, It does lock, Was easy to install, and priced cheaper then Thule or others. Cons: Needed bungees to make it water tight, Could not be driven at normal highway speeds, was a bitch to load and unload, poor support arms and barely functional lock...You get what you paid for. I probably will sell this thing and get a Thule or one of the bags that just sit inside the rack. I saw some of the Thule's that people had were bouncing around too. Anything shaped like that that allows air to get under it could have those issues at some point. But at least they could go the speed limit.
