Q: how to operation it？ need squeeze all the time to keep the water out？

You only need to squeeze the pump a few times, once water is flowing out it will continue whist ever the filter is in the tank and under the water

Q: Do you need to take the fish out of the water when you do this?

Depends on how many fish you have and if you are doing a half or complete water change. I have a 30 litre tank with 2 fish so don’t remove them. I leave enough water for them to swim in. Hope this helps.

Q: I have very fine sand, will be too strong for that? I find most pumps empty water too fast

I also had sand but couldn’t put the pump to the bottom as the sand would have been sucked up. I used to riddle the sand and then hold the pump an inch or so above it. It’s a good pump but yes it does take the water out fairly fast.. it’s the only one I’ve ever had so cannot compare it with any other.

Q: What diameter is the soft pipe, as I want to add a tap to stop the flow..?

You'll not need a tap, just lift the suction end pipe out of the water and it will stop. This is a good product that makes water changes easy.
