Great kite for fun and keeping birds from your fruit trees
Years ago I purchased a Jackite Osprey at a kite store in Palm Springs, Ca. Flew it as a kite and used it in classes when demonstrating "scarecrows." The kite is very realistic when in flight as it will hover, dart right or left, and the wings will flap. I once was flying it at the beach when a lady came up berating me for catching a "hawk" on my fishing line... when she finally paused long enough for me to get a word in, I told her it was a kite! She looked... and looked... then, finally smiled and walked away. The kite is made of a very strong plastic/paper (kevlar?) that is durable and long lasting. However, I learned the hard way that if the wing gets caught tight, you can, if careless, rip the material. I ended up ripping the wing off. Was delighted to find that they still make the Jackite and you can purchase it on Amazon.com.I bought the "assembled" version which does require some final assembly - well documented in the material that comes with the kite. If you attach a line to the "beak" of the kite and the other end to a pole in your garden, it will "fly" in the wind and chase away many of the birds the like to damage fruit. I plan to use this new kite in this manor for my cherry trees - or perhaps my strawberry patch. They sell fiberglass poles just for this purpose but I've heard you can also use pvc tubbing. Don't know how well that will work but I might try it.On my old kite, they also had a hole on the "chest" area of the kite where you could attach a string and fly it as a kite. This hole might have been added at the kite shop where I purchased my first kite. The new kite does not have any pre-made hole so you have to make it yourself. I made several along the chest area as some locations result in better flying when the wind is strong or weak. This is a great product and I highly recommend it.

Loved mine.
I am currently waiting on my 2nd Bird to be delivered. I had one for 2 years and I loved it. Well made although I recommend taking it down during heavy storms. Made of heavy Tyvek paper; but it is possible for it to tear. I purchased a fiberglass extendable pole but have read you could use a fishing pole too. I do enjoy watching it fly, beat its wings, and soar to a new position, so do all the neighbors. Didn't buy it for any special reason just plain enjoyment. The neighbor uses it to tell him which way the wind is blowing so he knows if it is safe to have a fire.Update. The 2nd one didn't make it through one full Summer. I am very disappointed. I had to repair it several times during the season and pitched it out about 3/4 of the way through Summer. Not as sturdy as the first one.

We love our Osprey
We love our Osprey. It is so entertaining and it flies when the wind blows. We hung it on a 20 foot fishing pole that we bought from Wallmart for $14.00! We mounted the pole on top of our fence. So far the predator birds are staying away.

Just Didn't Work on a Pole
Was pretty excited to install this today on our pole...we use kites to scare birds away from our farm...it is pretty and detailed...but immediately fell apart once up on the pole and in our breeze. Have another pole in the same area with a nylon kite that has been up for the last three years...so know that kites will work on our poles...so unfortunately have to give this one star as a kite to be used with a pole....possibly perfect for in hand use though!

Awesome. Flys and flaps.
The media could not be loaded. We have a house facing the ocean. There are daily problems with seagulls and we have gone through a few of these jackkites trying to find the ones that work best. This might be it. Easy to put together. It flies wonderful in low winds. And when the wind picks up this bird will actually flap like the real thing. So far the seagulls are avoiding it. Time will tell how well it works. I'll repost in a month.

Good bird deterrent that should be made stronger.
We fly this off a pole on the dock to keep birds off our boat. It works great until a squall carries it away. Usually go through two or three a season. Gets expensive but reduces the amount of cleaning you have to do.
