South Bend Neutron Spincast Combos

Picked up a few of these spincast combos to take my little boys fishing for the first time. When I bought these my younger two boys were 5 and 6 years old. For the price it was kind of a no-brainer because even if they only used them a few times it would have been worth it. Turns out, all of my boys caught on to the traditional reel set-up and this spincast was not necessary...if you are buying for a child you may be better suited to just buy a rod/reel combo. If you chose to buy this, the quality is adequate but nothing special and a bit frustrating to use. The rod is a decent quality two piece design that feels comfortable and fits snugly together. The action is kind of poor though, with flimsy plastic and a finicky spool release button. Casts are not smooth and the line only travels a small distance, even when I threw the cast. Overall, not the worst quality, but I would recommend the open rod/reel combo over a spincast even for a beginner...I bought the South Bend rod/reel combo [ASIN:B007PXPKI2 South Bend Neutron Spin Combo] for my older son and that one is much better. All of my boys immediately preferred that set-up to the spincast. Good luck

First off I was surprised by how good this combo is. I have not fished with it yet. I checked it out and here is what I see. Same size as Zebco 33 the rod has plastic lined eyes, this style seems to last longer. The spool looks and feels to be better than the Zebco The reel seems tight and that is a good thing because over the years I have noticed they all loosen up over time, and feeling tight at first makes it just right after it breaks in. I checked the drag and it seems like the same old cheap adjustment but it pretty smooth with the occasional small grab. I am comparing this to Zebco because I have bought a lot of them over the years and am sick of there junk. After inspecting the rod and reel I am going to buy 2 more. I expect this combo to get popular. Great price good combo. This is going to be a good bluegill and small cat rod. Looks like it holds 110 yrd of 8lb line and is pre-spooled. It's hard to read on the reel I hope this review helps you

First rod I ordered was broken on arrival. Fishing line was wrapped around and tangled off of the spool. It's inaccessible to detangle as it was under this non removalable silver colored part of the rod. Also when I did get part of it untangled the rod would not wind in any line even after adjusting tension.Was leaving for my trip in a few days and decided to just order 2 more and return this one so I'd have enough rods for the kids. Also just assumed this was a fluke and the next two can't be bad, right?? Wrong.2nd rod broke within first day of casting. During one of the casts after pushing the button the whole mechanism gave out and landed in the water with the button no where to be found.The third rod also arrived with line tangled outside of the main reel, I addressed this and the rod worked for a few days before it stoped winding In line. In order to continue using it it required you to wind with one hand and tighten the slack on the line with the other for the reel to grip and wind in the line. If you stopped winding you needed to repeat this procedure. Not something acceptable for young kids. Buy something of better quality- this is not worth it.

I bough 2 of these for my young kids because I refused to buy the silly "Kids" fishing poles. These have the feel of a rod and reel that can last a long time. They cast well and are working great. They get light/occasional use but I'm very pleased. One reel was a little tangled when it arrived so I did have to spend a little time pulling the fishing line out and getting it rewound but that stuff doesn't concern me too much as the mechanics were functional. These were a steel and I would recommend them to other occasional anglers!

After reading reviews, I was a bit skeptical about what I would receive. After one weekend of fishing for a 5, 7, and 9-yr old with this rod and reel, I say go for it. It's an awesome starter combo for a kid. Who knows how long it will last. I'd imagine probably not long. But I think I got my money's worth just from their faces and the time they had.

My grandson and I went fishing shortly after receiving this spincast combo. The rod is decent quality. The reel is easy to use and operates smoothly. The line casts a fair distance, but not as far as other rods I've used. My grandson caught a small cat fish with the combo and landed the fish without any mishap. I'd say that for the price, this is a good purchase.

Solid pole, easy to use and feels good in your hand. Some of the reviews had suggested it was good for smaller kids, it's not that the pole it too hard to use, it's just too big for them. (ages 5 and 6) I ended up buying a couple of kids poles for them after it became obvious this wasn't going to work for them.Used it myself for a few days and had no troubles at all with it. I even had a couple of the older kids we were with try it out and outside not being good at casting due to lack of practice they handled the pole pretty well. I recommend to anyone who is physically big enough to handle the pole size.

Can't beat the price and will do the job just disappointed the reel came with scratches and wear marks .... Wear marks are due to crappy packaging it was put in a box way to big for it with nothing els so it was being banged every time it was moved in transit

I have owned more than ten fishing reels and this is the worst I have ever had! The line is always stuck in the reel when rolling back, very frustrated, just threw the reel into the garbage bin! I do not know how the 5 stars reviews coming from but definitely not for me, the only reason I can give 1 star because at least I can still use the rod.

Excellent price and a great rod for the kids at the cottage.
