Git Essentials Paperback – April 28, 2015

This small book is a superficial introduction to Git and (a little bit) GitHub. It may be worth reading, though.However, for this price, one would expect a high-value and well-written text with quite some flesh to the bone. This definitely isn't the case.The book doesn't meet the promises it makes.

This is an awesome text for learning and reviewing GIT functions. I work with new developers/designers regularly and explaining GIT can be rough if they've never used a VCS (version control system) before. Mr. Santacroce does an excellent job of breaking down the essentials so that you feel like a GIT ninja! I would recommend this book for both beginners and experienced users as there are always new things to learn and the diagrams make complicated code machinations seem like routine procedures. GIT is a valuable dev tool, but most users only scratch the surface of its capabilities. With this text you can take your GIT game to the next level!

I had been interested in learning about Git and GitHub for a long time, but always had trouble getting started. Based on previous reviews of Git Essentials, I decided to give it a try. I dove straight in and worked through the whole book relatively quickly. I now feel that I have a solid understanding of Git functionality and best practices. Ferdinando Santacroce doesn't bore you with a million little details or too much theory, and at the same time, he doesn't make you feel like you're missing part of the story by leaving too much out. Further, Git Essentials has a nice balance of seriousness and humor. It stays on point without being dry.If you know what Git is and would like to incorporate it into your workflow, I'd highly recommend this book as a means for getting started.

I bought the kindle copy for it, and it was a great ready to get all my basics right for git. Its really helpful to ace yourself in this technology world with one of the most powerful version control systems. I suggested one reading it once every week and keep it handy to get your git essentials in place

It's okay. You can't derive much excitement or thrilling anticipation from any source control system but his book gives you enough to use without drowning you in endless pages of drivel. The examples worked okay. The title, Git Essentials, is probably about right.

Le livre a été imprimé en avril 2015, soit 7 mois avant mon commentaire : ce n'est pas un vieux livre, l'auteur n'est donc pas responsable, mais :Git a bien changé entre temps, et de très (trop) nombreuses erreurs criblent le livre, et rendent sa lecture désagréable et semée d'embuches.arrivé au chapitre 3, vous bloquerez page après page, presque chaque commande ne fonctionnant plus comme dans le livre. à s'arracher les cheveux, pourtant le livre a été écrit avec la facilité de compréhension à l'esprit.cependant, les deux derniers chapitres contiennent des conseils intéressants d'ordre général, qui redonnent un peu d'intérêt à l'ouvrage, sans compenser ses défauts.Hélas : Git est dans une phase de changement, et beaucoup de commandes changent, sont refondues, ect.Ma raison de l'achat de ce livre : j'aime à apprendre sur un support papier, mais en ce qui concerne Git/Github, vous trouverez sur internet de nombreux tutoriels gratuit, y compris sur le site officiel de Git, et le site de github, pour apprendre en douceur et avec une méthodologie "mise à jour". Je suis parti du principe qu'un contenu payant et généralement plus soigné qu'un tutoriel gratuit, ce qui en tout cas n'est pas le cas ici.Je regrette le temps perdu à déchiffrer à chaque problème si celà venait de moi, ou du livre. Celà a rendu l'apprentissage désagréable.Je suggère à l'auteur de mettre son livre à jour, car ce produit (22€) sous sa forme actuelle, est plus lent et difficile à utiliser, qu'un de ces supports gratuits sur internet.

Good solid explanations of both the overall concepts and tricky details. Separate chapter for those migrating from Subversion.

Not a very handy book. Better resources are available.
