The Bose SoundTouch 520 Home Theater System does not need a separate audio receiver. It is designed to be an all-in-one system. The SoundTouch 520 home theater system consists of five redesigned Direct/Reflecting Series II satellite speakers, a control console (the receiver), a wireless music adapter, a wireless hideaway Acoustimass module and a universal remote control. It also comes with an HDMI cable.

when the manual says left rear speaker: does it mean left of the tv wall or left from the seating position?

Left of seating position. To test your question with result, think of your car stereo, balance controls, are always displayed as you facing the control, head unit.
