This is how your brain wants to learn guitar
After playing guitar for over forty years, I recently decided that I needed to go back and relearn everything right from scratch. Sure I could play some nice licks and tunes but I knew that my ability to improvise was severely limited by my spotty understanding of how the guitar works. It wasn't due to a lack of information, of course I knew that the fifth fret of the E string was the same note as the open A string etc, but somehow it wasn't gelling in my mind. At least not in a form I could use.Goodrick's approach of learning the guitar by working horizontally (i.e. up and down) one string at a time, and sticking to one key until the intervals are perfectly instinctual was exactly what I needed. My other hobby is reading about how the brain works, especially how it learns and creates, and this approach seems to fit with what I understand about cognitive science. The traditional vertical approach is popular because it gets you playing chords and songs quickly but it doesn't allow the brain to develop a solid map of the instrument. In other words, you might be fine if you stick to set of chords and fingerings that you've learned by rote, but you won't be in a position to really fly.

Inspirational
The drills seem to bypass what we "know (our only limitations are what we know)," and engage supra-conscious learning in a profound and inspirational way. e.g. take one finger and only play and learn the notes on one string, then two fingers, then add a string. This exercise bypassed all sorts of preconceived mental blocks I didn't even realize I had that were negatively affecting everything I knew and did on the instrument.

Outstanding Guitar Book
The author takes a unique and effective approach in teaching you the entire fretboard. I couldn't recommend this book any higher for the developing guitarist.

The best book
Anyone, guitarist musicians or not can get totally pumped from this book. Particularly the anecdotes which comprise the last 3rd of the book. Mind blower and always worth picking up and reading any random page to get the gears turning. It is the best book for any guitarist of any skill or experience.

Love this book!
Goodrick's book is as informative as it is entertaining, an atypical method book. He does a wonderful job of describing the feel and techniques used in improvisation, and he does this with sincerity - no patronizing or controlling. The outlines of 1-2 string improvisation really are the key to truly integrating scales fluency and fretboard knowledge The section on tempi changed the way I approach music. This is a great book and I highly recommend it to guitarists who wish to understand music and the guitar better.

More than just another guitar method book
Not really a guitar method-- this is something more. Lots of good musical exercises and ideas, but it's also sort of a musical philosophy book. I suspect I'll be working with it for quite a while.

Zen Manual for Guitar
Like all the others say, It’s about how to approach the guitar, not a scale and chord didactic. Free your mind, and the rest will follow. . .

for serious musicians
The title says it all. This book is not for the lazy, intimidated or "too talented to learn" guitarist. This is for the guitarist who wants to put in the hours and master the instrument. There is a lifetime worth of study material in here, so it's definitely worth the price.

This is a serious self-study book, not some detail packed eye-opener.
I don't recommend anyone buy this book if they're expecting/hoping it to really provide breakthrough information, that'll help the beginner/intermediate guitarist make it all make sense - it won't, I'll tell you that in no uncertain terms. This book has a couple little tidbits of insight that clarify some topics, though only if you've already gone on a deep rabbit hole of studying musical concepts. This book is best suited for the well rounded musician/guitarist who knows about the many facets music offers, and wants material to briefly address topics and provide exercises to offer acoustic examples to instill in the reader's musical mind.

Libro estremamente stimolante
Mi a incantato.
