Could you use lava rocks instead?

Anything that burns works great. I use compressed charcoal and it’s much cheaper than the cobb alternative

I made the mistake of not spraying the inside with oil and not putting 200 mls hot water in the moat after barbecuing which resulted in a baked on mess. I soaked the BBQ in hot water and tartaric acid before scrubbing the inside with a green scourer and Pink Stuff. Since then I have followed the instructions as above in the booklet and haven’t had an issue since. The grill tray itself I followed Nancy Birtwhistles advice and threw it into long grass overnight before cleaning which really helps remove any burnt on bits. Honestly!!
