Q: whats the difference between the one with the 7 or 9 filters?

the number is how many inches tall the filters are. the taller one (9") will filter water at a slightly higher rate. when i used one of these, we had 7 people getting ALL of their drinking and cooking water from it (one bathed with it) in a very hot and dry climate. There was never a shortage of water, but i did have it fed by a filthy mosquito larva, bird poop, rat poop infested cistern 24/7 (a float valve prevented overfilling) and the sweet filtered water drained into a bunch of 5 gallon containers. Never got sick.

Q: The black rubber seal, on the bottom, leaks. Is there any way to replace it?

Right on. If properly lubed and installed, it won't leak. UNTIL the plastic shank wears out from all the side-side pressure. Then it will slowly crack then leak like mine, then fall off during the night. Like mine. Make sure the opening is derbies free. Check to see it isn't dented or out of round. you may need to take a small wrench and tighten it a little tighter. Also make sure that your washers are installed right.

Q: How do you make the water alkaline with a British berkefeld?

The System does not remove healthy minerals, so you will have them in the water if they are already there before the water is filtered. If you would like to have the PH level rise, you would have to use something that alkalizes the water, which we do not have any recommendations.
