Melatonin is a hormone released by the pineal gland. Melatonin side effects, melatonin in children Common melatonin side effects include enhanced dreams, better dream recall, possible nightmares, mild next morning grogginess, and mild morning fatigue. These melatonin side effects are dosage dependent. The higher the melatonin dosage, the more likely side effects would occur. These melatonin side effects can occur in children. Long term melatonin side effects are not well understood. You may wish to limit your melatonin use to no more than 2 or 3 times a week. Children should preferably take less than 1 mg of melatonin and no more than twice a week.
