Deceiving the Sky: Inside Communist China's Drive for Global Supremacy

Bill Gertz is perhaps the best national security reporter in America. I worked with him in exposing Economic Warfare. He knows his stuff and this book is terrific.

Author Gertz doesn't pull any punches in outing China as a great threat, as even our worst enemy. Under the leadership of hard-liner Xi Jinping, China wants to assume its ".rightful dominant place as the leader of the world, and to destroy the United States of America." For decades China has conned us into thinking it was not a threat to us, not economically, diplomatically or militarily, despite clear signs to the contrary. Previous administrations before Trump were duped or were feckless in allowing China to become more powerful. For instance, under Bill Clinton technology was allowed to be transferred to China so that Chinese strategic missiles wouldn't blow up on the launch pad, and that technology also allowed China to launch multiple satellites, some of which were essentially space weapons. And Obama sat idly by "ignoring and then covering up China's massive theft of American technolgy," which Gertz estimates now runs about $600 billion annually. Furthermore, "inaction by Obama facilitated the Chinese domination over the strategic South China Sea.To spread its influence and power, China is undertaking the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which involves dozens of countries in Asia and the Middle East. China provides assistance and loans and manpower to construct public works programs in these nations, many of them Third World countries. Projects like roads, airports, railroads, pipelines electrical facilities, hospitals, on and on. If the loans go into default, China, meaning the Chinese Communist Party and the People's Liberation Army (PLA), take control of those finished project. The BRI also fosters China's establishment of military and diplomatic bases in these nations.President Trump recognizes that economic security is an integral part of America's national security. Trump is "pushing back against decades of unfair trade and technology practices" by the Chinese. It remains to be seen how effective Trump's tariff and trade strategy against China works out, in my opinion.The author discusses the possibility of a space war, whereby China would knock out our satellites, by using ground-based directed energy (think:lasers), launched kinetic missiles, and space-based weaponized satellites. Our navigational satellites would initially be disabled, then our reconnaissance satellites, and next our communications satellites.Gertz also discusses the importance of 5G wireless and wired technology and how China wants to control communications globally. The Chinese company, the world's large telecommunications outfit, Huawei, is fingered as a Chinese Communist Party-controlled espionage entity. Huawei is currently a hot-button topic as I write this review. Trump doesn't trust Huawei when it comes to our national security, and rightfully so.The author strenuously points out China's unabated desire to take Taiwan into its fold as just another province, with s autonomous nation status being dissolved. China would even engage in a limited shooting war with the United States over this it's asserted.Gertz lists fourteen steps the United States should take to combat the Chinese threats. These steps involve economic and financial and military and doplomatic measures.Some readers of this book may think of Gertz as Chicken Little. Not me.

Gertz has a record of accurately warning of the threats from Chinese espionage, strategic military buildup, and to a lesser extent, its economic warfare; the latter which is treated here more comprehensively. A compliment and update to books by Michael Pillsbury and Seth Cropsey, and well as Gertz’s mentor on Chinese affairs, Constantine Menges.

About time someone outlined in clean easy to comprehend complete picture of Chinese Government. After reading it, whenever I can, I buy items not made in China, even if they cost few % more. Why would I want to help communist regime who steals and cheats their way to world dominance.

This book is an excellent wakeup call to every American. This book offers incredible insight on China's real, sincere, and genuine plans are. China is a communist state that wants to end all dissent in every part of the globe. That is a fact. They have been quite successful at eliminating all dissent in China, and now they are trying to end dissent in Hong Kong. They also wish to interfere in other countries affairs, like Taiwan. We must take this threat very seriously. Far too many books don't really understand what is going on in China, but this book provides incredible insight. And it is a page turner! I have had a tough time putting this book down!

This is one of the books where you can learn the causes of many impactful international issues nowadays. Take a look and you won't regret it.
