How do you get the rainbow effect?

You don’t. The picture just seems to be edited to show the wide spectrum of colors it can turn. The closest you can get to it is pushing one of the buttons on the right of the remote to have it go through each color individually.

Can I keep the tv off with the lights and how do I do that?

I have multiple sets of these on a few different brand TVs, and from my experience, only TVs that have USB power that turns on and off with the device will do what you're asking: - My Samsung TVs acts the way you're expecting. - My TCL TVs continuously power the strip, regardless of the TV state - some models have an option to turn USB power off with the TV, and some have multiple USB ports that behave differently (ones intended for USB drives seem to be different from ones dedicated to powering streaming devices). My workaround was to learn the LED strip IR codes on my home automation system, and trigger the on/off/color commands along with the ones for powering on/off the TV. There may be a way to use a universal TV remote to learn the codes as one of the other devices (Cable, DVD, etc.), if available...

can you attach or link more light strips to the ends and extend it? I purchased a short strip and need to extend it

Hi from experience yes you can but you got to have those little strips that you connect together I didn't do it with teasy lights by day with the other lights that my daughters have in the bedrooms
