most of which are discontinued (but one of which I have and like a lot)
These are for a very specific and limited set of tools, most of which are discontinued (but one of which I have and like a lot). But they are good tools and the continued availability of the batteries makes them continually useful. As to the batteries, they are excellent, hold charge well, and power the tool up to its design level. These NiMH batteries are much preferred over the older weaker model. And prices vary widely on the internet and the Amazon price was excellent. I also hope that Amazon has at least a modest demand for these so that stocks are not too old, though I haven't figured out a way to evaluate that.

Are Gold batteries better than Silver?
I have an old screwdriver VP750 Type 1 that has had the original silver battery in it until two years ago so I purchased this gold battery at a Westlake’s Store since they only had the gold. They are both the same voltage so the power of the screwdriver should be the same as I did not notice that it had any more power, but after using I noticed that it did not last even a year vs. the old original silver lasting twenty yrs plus. That did not make me happy to say the least so I hesitated in buying this Gold one from Amazon since the other Gold I purchased only lasted a short time. I guess I will see how long this one will last, but I will not be using it like I did before I retired. I think it depends on how long it's been on the shelf might make a difference & Amazon sells way more than Westlake’s so I feel this battery will be newer with less shelf life. I have been messing with other rechargeable batteries AA and AAA and even the best will sometimes just die much before they should with some internal problems that do happen to the best. Just do not leave the batteries in the charger for long periods since heat destroys batteries. I would guess from the reviews this battery should last longer but after reading all of the reviews I have not seen one say how long they actually worked for them before they purchased another. Black and Decker states this battery has the NiMH technology but is it still a NiCad? Other batteries cannot be used in the same chargers since one must stay with the correct chargers. I believe it is a NiCad that does not have the memory like a regular NiCad and somehow they use the NiMH technology wording on the battery. That being said I believe the silver and gold are the same batteries and the gold has a few more mAh's. Why does B&D use both since it makes their product look bad if the battery is not the better one? Also for $12.00 more I could have bought the complete screwdriver with gold battery but I love my old driver and will use it until they no longer make a battery for it. Reviews are good on items that are used instantly or for a few years, but with an item like this battery one cannot really be asked to review it until it has been in service longer.

I can do yard work again!
Battery arrived in a box with 2 or 3 other things. It was just the battery wrapped in plastic wrap, no fancy packaging. I purchased the charger & 1 battery combination and that had not yet arrived. When it did, I put the batteries in for charging. About a day and a half later I started using my clippers and blower. They worked wonderfully, as good as I can ever remember since having them. If the batteries have a decent life to them I will be ecstatic. One note: when I received the combo pack, there was a red plastic cap to put over one end of the battery to protect it if you ever transport the batteries (such as putting them in your pocket after putting your tools away, or such). I do not recall the red cap with this individual battery. The rating reflects the fact that after this short amount of time I cannot possibly know how well the battery will consistently recharge, or how long a life span it will have. That is a crucial consideration of a battery. Consider it a 4 out of 4 rating.

Gold Is The Way To Go
I sold B&D products at one time and, at that time, there were many products that used the VP batteries. Initially there were only the "silver" batteries which were NiCads. When the "gold" batteries (Nickle Metal Hydride) came out I made the "mistake" of buying some to bring home to test in my wife's Floor Buster (small B&D vacuum). After she had used the new batteries for about a week she told me to not bring home the silver ones any more. Golds have a longer run time, don't build up the "memory" of NiCads, and seem to have an overall longer life. If you need the VP batteries for any of your B&D products, my advice is to "go for the gold." BTW, if you have VP batteries that no longer keep a charge, take them to Radio Shack for disposal and recycling please.

Nice price and quick shipping for this battery - getting harder to find these!
This was exactly what I was looking for as one of the other batteries I had for my Black & Decker spowered screwdrive died - may it rest in peace!!LOL!!This battery worked great - the price was very fair and it arrived quickly in perfect condition. I would rate this a very high 8.75 to 9.25 out of 10 - recommended if you have this tools that use this particular batter system.

i've usually had good experiences with b & d products
i've usually had good experiences with b & d products. fortunately, i did not have the problems some of the reviewers mentioned. when my battery arrived i gave it a full charge, per instructions, and popped it into my power screw driver. function seems to be right on target, and holds a charge forever. kinda agree about the price, but if it holds up it will be worth it.

Good if you use them
This powers any B&D VersaPak tool you own. If you have a charger, just charge the battery overnight and plug battery into the tool. The problem comes in drainage when not in use. If you're like me, you're not using it every day. I may use my power screwdriver once/month or less. That means when I go to use it, it often has drained itself dead. That means recharging it, which means I can't do my project that day. I have to remember to charge the night before. This is, needless to say, INCONVENIENT.Further, after about one year of charges, it simply dies. This is about my fourth or fifth replacement, and the costs adds up. Since I own the tools, what choice do I have at this point? Lithium ion would be much better; why they stick with NiMH is unclear.
