Warning: Cast Changes Ahead
I doubt any kid that grew up in the late 80's or early 90's doesn't have memories of Hey Dude! How could you not love the Nickelodeon show about the adventures of the teen staff at a dude ranch in Arizona? Season 3 has been released, which means we are over half way through the show now.It also means we've hit the year of the cast changes. After only two episodes in season two, Ted (David Lascher) leaves because he has to attend summer school. But before he does, he becomes a dictator when placed in charge of the ranch for a day and finally gets Brad (Kelly Brown) to go on a date with him. Her reaction to finding out he has to leave is so touching. That also means that they bring in some new cast members. For most of this season, that's Jake (Jonathan Galkin), nephew of ranch owner Mr. Ernst (David Brisbin). Initially, he wants to leave, and his cousin Buddy (Josh Tygiel) wants him gone just as much. But then he changes his mind and tries to fit in. And in the season finale, we also meet Kyle (Geoffrey Coy), the teenage son of a friend of adult ranch hand Lucy (Debrah Kalman). And the sparks start to fly almost right away between Kyle and Brad.So what else is happening around the ranch this season? Brad enters a jumping show. Lifeguard Melody (Christine Taylor) gets visits from both her best friend and her brother. Buddy tries to reunite his parents and decides he needs to move out…to the guy's bunkhouse. And Danny (Joe Torres)? Well, Danny just tries to hang on with all the other hijinks happening around the ranch. And there's plenty of fun going on as Melody stops being a nice guy and the ranch gets into a baseball game with their rivals down the road for water rights.Okay, so it's not exactly great TV. The production is adequate at best. The acting from the returning actors has gotten better, although even then it's just okay. You can tell why most of the cast hasn't done much else since then. The new additions to the cast are a little stiff, although Jonathan Galkin seems to be settling in by the end of the season. Even so, I've never like Jake. Feel the same way about Kyle. The episodes with Ted were always the best. (My understanding is that David Lascher left for another show which got canceled, which is why he showed up again in season 4 and 5.)Another thing about the show - you can't miss the time period. The fashion just screams 80's. In fact, I think I owned some of those shirts. What was I thinking? So, with all these flaws, what is the appeal of the show? It's the characters and the humor. Yes, this is a sitcom, although it doesn't have laugh track. Still, you'll grin or laugh at the antics of the cast.More importantly, the characters are awesome. The friendships among them is still very appealing, even as an adult. It makes me want to show up at the Bar None Ranch to hang out with the characters in person. And that's why the show was so popular back in the day. Each season of Hey Dude! was 13 episodes long, and once again those episodes are contained on two discs. The full frame and mono sound are fine since that's what the show originally aired in. The one exception is "Melody's Brother." Apparently the masters of this episode have been lost, and the episode is included with less than perfect presentation. It looks like someone's old VCR tape copy. However, it's a weak episode over all (very special anti-alcohol episode), and given a choice I'd rather it be included this way than not at all.Unless you already love the show, the flaws in the show will probably overwhelm you. But for fans of the show, nostalgia will definitely make you want to own season 3 of Hey Dude!

Hey Dude's transitional season, and its best. Bar None!
In Hey Dude's 3rd season, the Bar None is in constant flux. In the span of 13 episodes, we see Ted at his most insane (Inmates Run the Asylum), we see him win Brad over and depart the show at the peak of his powers, we see quirky and superstitious but intelligent Jake join the gang, we are introduced to the always-entertaining bucolic Vlecks, Melody is given a quarter for her college education and later chokes a stuffed bear, we get athletic cameos from Bobby Bulp, Flash McGuire and Captain Lou Albano "Master of the Seven Seas," we learn that the master tape for Hey Dude's "very special episode" (Melody's Brother) is currently lost, and we get yet another addition to the crew, cowboy Kyle, and he encourages Buddy to pursue a career as a rodeo clown. All in 1 season! The show was kicked up a notch when Ted returns, and I'm already waiting for the next season to arrive on DVD. What would make it even better would be some B-roll footage, behind the scenes clips, TV/promo spots, a tour of the ranch, or a 'where are they now' segment. Hey Dude really does have its diehard fans, and I'm one of them. Thank you Shout! Factory for keeping the Bar None flame burning!

season 3 love it!!!
I'm so glad they are continuing with this, this show has so much nostalgia,it brings you back to a time when tv was great to watch and you didn't have to worry about stupid reality shows, its too bad about the Melody's brother episode with the picture quality, but i'm sure Shout and Viacom did the best they could with it,other than that all the other eps look great, especially the last one, the only other disapointment is no special features at all, it would have been nice to have a commentary on one of the episodes with one of the cast members or maybe a gag reel or something, but hopefully they are saving it for the last 2 seasons, its just really great to have this show on dvd,its been a long long wait,so i shouldn't complain too much, cant wait for season 4, yippie tai yaye yay!!! yippie tai yaye what?

One of my favorite shows ever!
One of my favorite shows ever! I discovered the show when I was looking through the internet looking at different early Nick shows. Hey Dude was one of the only ones who really stood out to me. The show is a comedy, but also teaches life lessons. The setting is on a Dude Ranch where teenagers work and live for the summer. Mr. Earnest owns the ranch and has a son named Buddy. They get in many scrapes and scrabbles, but always manage to get out of them comically. I would recommend this show to anyone who enjoys comedies. Though I'm sure anyone could enjoy the show!

Great show! Issue with Amazon Prime and not including final two seasons!
Hey Dude is a great classic nick show. My issue is with Amazon Prime. It is ridiculous how they give you the first three seasons of a show that is 20+ years old included with Prime. Prime then wants to charge you $10.99 per season for the last two. Instead Amazon should just have ads and give it for free to Prime members. I would not mind a minute of ads prior to the start of each episode as long as I can watch all of the classic show episodes included with my Prime membership. This is thing Netflix does better than Amazon. I do not have to worry about starting a show on Netflix and be charged more than the membership I have already paid for to continue watching the show.

Great to bring back the memories from my childhood with a show like this. Loved watching it when I was younger and it was still fun today (even though the show is way more cheesy than I remember).

Hey Dudes and dudettes...you want this dvd!
Loved this show when I was a kid. Love it even more now. It brings me back to my childhood and makes me smile. Not the best acting, but it's so fun and just overall entertaining. I can't wait to get the other two seasons! One of the best shows from Nick.
