Parents-to-be, adore this book
Since we learned we're expecting, my husband and I have purchased several dozen picture books to read for fun and to transition into parenting. We happened to come across this one while visiting New York, and we think it is one of the very best we have in our collection! The story is sweet and clever, and the colors and pictures reveal something new on each read. While I can't say for sure how our child will one day feel about the book, I'm pretty confident he'll like it too. We've bought copies from Amazon for our other friends who are expecting, particularly those with some connection to New York City, since the book is set there and references the subway and different sites.

Uncomfortable storyline
The illustrations are cute, and I love the book Please Bring Balloons, which is also by this author. But the storyline here bothered me. Blue says over and over that she is trying to find Egg's mother, and they travel around the city looking for her. They never find her, so Blue gives up and decides to keep Egg.Will kids make the leap to "if I get lost, I won't be able to find my mother and the person who's supposed to help will keep me"? No, maybe not. But the whole "the reason they can't find the mother is because Egg is actually a snowball and has no mother" idea might be beyond the grasp of very small kids too (it's never explicitly said that that's why they couldn't find the mother). Kids will definitely pick up on the fact that they are searching and never finding. It just struck me as an odd and uncomfortable story for a mother to read to her child.

Where does the egg belong?
We love this book. Bird mistakes an snow ball for an egg and travels far and wide to find the egg's mother. The book shows many places and the kids like to think of their own places to go.

Cute, Cute, Cute...
And what a clever ending. Thoroughly enjoyed by my kinder kid and I. We enjoyed our tour through New York.

One Of Our Favorite Books
We got this book as a present and we love it! My son just asked me read it to him between Zoom sessions.I don't buy the "uncomfortable storyline" review by one of the customers here. By that standard, we should throw most of our childhood books into the fire. Yes, including "Where The Wild Things Are" cause, you know, a mother is leaving her son without supper as a punishment, what kind of a message is that? Call child services? Don't even get me started on "Red Riding Hood" (and no, I chose not to introduce my son to that story)."When Blue Met Egg" is about friendship and the illustrations make me stop and study the pages.

When Blue Met Egg, it was the beginning of a beautiful friendship...
When Blue Met Egg is my favorite book today because in part, well it's adorable and beautifully illustrated. But as any librarian knows, "adorableness" in children's books is overrated... because it's everywhere in our collections. An adorable book only rises above the other fluff by having additional qualities. This book not only has a New York City setting (see cover for my favorite building), but I just love Blue. Blue, like many young beings, has that inexplicable talent for making the most unlikely friends in an unconditional, truly heartfelt and honest way. Blue takes his new friend Egg everywhere. For months. Until Egg begins to appear somewhat under the weather, and starts to lose weight and get smaller... as we sometimes do when we are not well. It is this moment in the story where my chest tightens and I feel tears behind my eyes for fear that Blue will be met with heartbreak and disillusionment... and in turn lose his innocence and interminably kind spirit. Seriously, this was my response. Maybe it was the lack of caffeine, my fragile emotional state, or just the fact that for a short children's story- this book is well written and touching. Read it so I don't have to spoil the ending.

So many reasons to love Blue...
Blue is a little bird with a big heart, helping her friend Egg find its home in the sweet story of WHEN BLUE MET EGG. What starts as a quest for Blue quickly transforms to a friendship where Blue can't imagine a day, a week, or a month passing without Egg at her side. In the end, Blue discovers that friends can change over time, but that just means something lovely can grow between two great pals. This is the type of picture book that kids will want to read again and again because the illustrations have so much to discover. Ward works in cut paper, which means that fun images such as maps, equations, postmarks, and other ephemera might be glossed over in one reading only to be spied during another. This picture book will definitely appeal to those who love New York City, adventurers, and nature lovers alike. There's nothing more adorable than Blue ice skating or visiting the Statue of Liberty. Ok, well maybe holding up the UPC code on the back of the book. Too cute! Can't wait for Ward's next book. I hear it is something about a polar bear...should be quite a rumpus.
