Glad I chose to ignore the bad reviews
The smart tech train set is exactly as I hoped. It works for about a day of light play on a set of normal batteries.I would say that might be under powered but seen as the normal battery powered trains far exceed expectations I think this one is closer to expected. It works great and for one month it has only missed a smart tunnel signal once.I thought by the reviews that these might be poor and hit and miss with the signals but they work fine until the battery is low and the train turns the receiver off and turns it's lights to red, which is after hours of play. Maybe if it was going constantly it might be a few hours. A pack of loads of normal batteries is cheap and every parent will be familiar with how many batteries get used up by their toys.I will say I have not tested rechargeable batteries but take it from what Brio say that they are no good for this due to the power needed so avoid rechargeable batteries.I am so glad I got this our son loves it.

Perfect for train lovers
Purchased this for my grandsons 3rd birthday and he was over the moon he loves his brio trains, track and tunnels. He lived recoding his voice to play back when the train when by the bridge for that option he also liked that the train went backwards. Hours of fun ahead

DO NOT BUY
I wish I had read the reviews before purchasing this. Replacement set now has to be sent back again due to the train not recognising any of the tunnels. So many negative reviews indicting the same problem. It seems brio are aware of the problem but the only solution they have offered is to replace the batteries- awful! A friend has a much older smart tech train with no issues so I suspect a major software issue with this new generation of smart tech trains. Hugely expensive and overpriced for a useless set. Amazon have since reduced price, I can only assume they want to get rid of the stock. 3 year old son very disappointed. Have contacted brio and asked for an explanation as to why they are knowingly continuing to sell a faulty product. We have an old battery operated brio train (not smart tech) which works fine. Suggest buying cheaper track (eg big jigs) and purchasing a battery operated remote controlled brio train!

Smart tunnels don’t work after first use!!!
Nice train set bought for my 2year oldAfter first use the action tunnels no longer respond as the train is passing through what’s all this about brio?! Put brand new batteries in them (1.5v) as stated on the instructionsI have read previous reviews and there seems to me that everyone is having the same issueI have ordered ‘high capacity’ aaa batteries not convinced this will make a difference. The train and it’s software clearly needs looking at or updating

High Battery Consumption
Had the same issue with the action tunnels not working. Brio customer support reply below. Worked fine after replacing batteries but suspect they won’t last long again in order for all functions to work correctly.- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -The Smart Tech and Smart Tech Sound products require high capacity batteries to enable the functions to work efficiently. We recommend you use high capacity 'alkaline' batteries according to the voltage specified in the battery instructions. We believe, alkaline batteries, will always outperform any re-chargeable ones.If the batteries are weak, or run low, the Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) reader in the engine might miss a chip in a tunnel or destination. The Engine's RFID reader needs to be in close proximity to read the chips in the tunnels, so if any tunnels are placed above the surface, you will need to raise the level of the engine for it to work.
