Q: Mine came not painted, it is just silver. Is this normal or is there some kind of rust preventative coating?

Mine came as depicted in the picture. Black paint on the starter shield around the windings since this will rust just slowly. No paint on the cast aluminum areas since cast aluminum oxidizes only very slowly unless exposed to road salts which is unlikely to happen where the starter is mounted. Also the solenoid housing was anodized, as the picture depicts, likely with zinc, to give it a rust prevention coating which it typical of many starter solenoids. In my experience the starter windings shield has always been painted!

Q: this fits the manual transmission version?

The starter should fit and automatic or manual transmission. As long as the starter is the correct one for the engine..

Install and go

What I loved about this is that is was a direct OEM and after little adjusting to cable location, installed in no time. I took my time and worked out extremely well!!! Will buy again if need to. I suggest to anyone, if your starter spins and take a few times to connect to the flywheel. Replace the starter and not worry about a rebuild. Saves you so much time just to buy a new starter and be done.

It got here on time and it was a perfect fit

Do NOT Buy

Worked for one week after installation. Starter had a high pitch sound. Then bendix stopped working and the starter spun but wouldn't engage the fly wheel. I was stranded at the car wash and had to get a tow home. Price was too good to be quality. I should have known better. Replaced with one from Auto Zone with a lifetime warranty. I can't wait for parts to be delivered.

Good Product

Installing a starter isn't rocket surgery, but it dang sure ain't easy. Great starter. Truck starts extremely fast, even on a cold winter morning. Installed on a '95 Silverado, and am very happy with it. Sucks that it's made in China.
