Surprised at the recording quality. Seems more like a 70's or 80's mix. Brass is really forward and brash. Could be the producer's mindset.

WOW!
It is only recently I have discovered the R&B/funk group Lettuce. Originally from the Boston area they have been together since 1992. How I could have gone this long without hearing about this group before now is beyond me. Since coming across this band I have been getting as much chance as possible to know them and their music better. While researching them I came across their 2015 album "Crush". In writing this review if I was only allowed one word to summarize this entire album it would have to be WOW!I downloaded this album to my smartphone music folder and ever since then I have had a problem with it. Everytime I play "Crush" my phone starts dripping with funk. It then gets all over me. That in turn makes me tap my toes and bob my head to the beat. I guess it is alright though because I do have a big smile on my face when I play this album or anything else for that matter from Lettuce. What makes this whole album even more amazing is that the creativity and and quality of the music never lets up. From start to finish there is no weak moment during the music or letting up on the funk. There are 16 tracks altogether, 12 songs and 4 musical interludes or 'ludes as they call it, that will keep your toes tapping and head bobbing too.In concluding this review let me just say that when eating you should include some lettuce in your diet. And when listening to music you should include some Lettuce in your playlist.

Funk-Jazzの新時代
Lettuce Souliveが大好きな人間です。今作の出来は過去最高と言っていいんじゃないでしょうか。音作りは往年のFunkを意識して少しざらつきのある感じで、これがとてもマッチしています。今作で光るのはNeal Evans のバッキングとAdam Deitchのカッチカチのドラミング、ワウで歪めたホーン隊です。特に、ニールの音作りはソロ作のBangの音そのものです。誰にも真似できない独特で古風なのに新しいオルガンの音とギターと聞き間違うようなクラヴィネット。たまりません。全体として前作Flyの"宇宙的な"音作りがさらに進化し、より現代風になりつつも、リズム隊がかっちりリズムを刻み込むことでより音楽の幅が広がったイメージです。ギターのShmeensがキッチリ刻むのと対照にEric Krasnoが粘っこくロックな感じで分業しているのも特徴的です。最近のEricはYoutubeのSouliveのBowliveの動画でも確認できるようにかなりロックに寄せてきているイメージが強いです。個人的には2006年に来日した際に聴いたセミアコの乾いた音作りがとても好きだったのですが、このアルバムに関してはこの音作りが非常にマッチしておりいい緊張感があります。やはり最近のシーンはPretty Lightsのように打ち込みチックな音作りなのだなと確信し、Funkというジャンルが一歩進化したのを確認できた1枚でした。Robert GlasperやHiatus KaiyoteのようにR&B-Jazzを攻めるバンドと新作をPretty Lightsで知られるDerekと共に作ったことを公式に発表しているSouliveの新作が近々発売されるのを思うと、Funk-Jazzを攻めるバンドがいよいよ熱くなり、またJazzの枠が広がっていくのがとても楽しみでなりません。

ソウライブのメンバーが中心のファンクジャズでしたが、前作からソウライブのテイストが全くなくなりました。好き嫌いで言うと嫌いです。
