Decca Classics announces the release of Carnival, a very special collaboration between Academy Award-winning actor Olivia Colman, children’s author Michael Morpurgo and the seven “extraordinarily talented” (Classic FM) Kanneh-Mason siblings – Isata, Braimah, Sheku, Konya, Jeneba, Aminata and Mariatu. The brand-new Kanneh-Mason album, their first as a family, will be released on 6th November 2020.Recorded at London’s Abbey Road Studios, the release includes new poems written by War Horse author Morpurgo to accompany French composer Saint-Saëns’ beloved musical suite ‘Carnival of the Animals’. The poems are read by the author himself, joined by The Favourite actor Colman, and guest musicians complete the ensemble for the suite.On working with the Kanneh-Masons, Morpurgo says, “These young people are remarkable, not because they are young, not because they are the seven siblings from one family, but simply because they make magnificent music together, and it is evident they love doing it. Hear them and you know it. See them and you know it.”Along with Colman’s readings interposing the humorous suite ‘Carnival of the Animals’, which represents different animals through descriptive musical motifs, the recording features Morpurgo’s heart-warming Grandpa Christmas story, set to music for the first time with classic tracks including ‘Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy’, ‘Flight of the Bumblebee’ and ‘Sea Murmurs’.Morpurgo reads the role of Grandpa, with the youngest Kanneh-Mason, Mariatu, reading his granddaughter. The album includes a new arrangement of Eric Whitacre’s ‘The Seal Lullaby’ featuring all seven siblings, aged between 11-24. It is also the debut recording for youngest sisters Konya, Jeneba, Aminata and Mariatu.Also featuring on the album is the Kanneh-Masons’ own arrangement of Bob Marley’s iconic hit ‘Redemption Song’, marking 40 years since its release in 1980 – fewer than five years before the singer’s death.The stunning artwork for Carnival has been specially commissioned from children’s illustrator Emma Chichester Clark, who has created a colourful storybook world featuring vibrant birds, friendly kangaroos, curious elephants and all seven of the Kanneh-Mason siblings – depicted, of course, with their instruments. Quick and well packed delivery. Bought for my mum who had first seen a member of family on young musician of the year and then saw more of family on sStrictly Come Dancing. Loves the fact they are siblings from the same lovely and talented family

Loved this
I love both the music and most of the poetry. I know some reviewers think there is too much talking and I can understand this; if there is one moment I don't like it is when Morpurgo interrupts a piece of music part way through to read a poem. But overall I strongly recommend this.

The Kanneh-Mason family play Saint-Saens
An enchanting rendition of the Carnival of the Animals, with Michael Morpurgo's poetry, Olivia Colman's narration and the seven Kanneh-Mason musicians at their brilliant best. A stand-out CD.

Thoroughly enjoyable, brought back fond memories when I studied this piece of music at school. Enjoyed the famil ensemble, what brilliant young people they are.

It’s good
If your expecting this to be the famous Peter and the Wolf story it is not. It’s of the same idea. Mixing narration with music this basically describes some of the different animals that exist using classical music for each character. I think this may be good for young children to introduce them to animals and classical music. It is good relaxing background music and was cheap.

Was going to purchase on CD, but decided on vinyl to show my students. The inside and sleeves are stunning. Thank you..... recommended as a gift to young and old.

Vorneweg : die Musik ist wunderschön und wirklich ein Genuss. Bei den Texten handelt es sich um neue Verse von Michael Morpurgo zu "Karneval der Tiere", die er und (besonders schön) Olivia Colman lesen. Die Tiere in diesen Versen sind nicht alle liebenswert verspielt- fröhlich sondern durchaus vielschichtiger. Zum Teil fast aggressiv. Außerdem ist zu dem Morpurgo Bilderbuch "Grandpa Christmas", dass der Autor und die jüngste Kanneh-Mason Schwester lesen, Musik ausgewählt und eingespielt worden. Dieses Bilderbuch ist weniger eine klassische Weihnachtsgeschichte, denn ein Brief eines Großvaters an seine Enkelin mit Erinnerungen an einen Sommertag und dem Wunsch, die Natur zu erhalten, den diese jedes Weihnachtsfest mit ihrer Familie liest. Somit ist auch die Musik dazu offensichtlich keine Weihnachtsmusik. Die Texte sind natürlich komplett auf Englisch - es handelt sich also eher um ein englischsprachiges, musikalisches Hörbuch. Aufgrund der fantastischen Musik, wunderbar gespielt von der Kanneh-Mason Familie, die ein Geschenk an die Musikwelt sind und für mich der Auslöser zum Kauf des Albums waren, an sich eine Empfehlung. Allerdings ist die CD so ungünstig geschnitten, dass oftmals das letzte Wort oder die letzten Worte der Texte verschluckt werden. Sehr enttäuschend und daher kein absoluter Tipp von mir.
