Great for eliminating fungus gnats
I used it as a soil topper. It's perfect for keeping fungus gnats out of my plants. This and mosquito bits totally took care of the infestation

Fungus gnats? ABSOLUTELY GET IT
The media could not be loaded. Ok so I was looking for something to help with the fungus gnats eating up my moms avocado tree she’s been growing. The infestation was so bad we had to move the tree outside and then we started seeing the terrible little monsters getting into our other houseplants. I came upon this product and based off reviews decided to give it a try. It was delivered Nov. 4th and I’m writing this review Nov. 8th.The packaging- the box was literally Smushed. I mean, half the box was torn open and had I flipped the box, the bags would’ve just fallen out. I didn’t mind this at all, it’s HEAVY sand and UPS can only do so much. My delivery man was very nice about it and I’m grateful the bags didn’t burst. The sand is heavy so it’s understandable that throughout the shipping around and processing the box got messed up. There was bubble cushioning so even though the box was messed up you could tell the actual bags never shifted. SO 10/10Fungus gnats- it helped. SO MUCH!! In the video I posted you can see the little demons laying on the sand, deceased 😌 YAY. Honestly if you’re having an infestation issue try this out. I literally only used this and started bottom watering. Within FOUR DAYS the bugs are mostly gone. I’ll still be taking other measures to get rid of them completely and prevent another infestation. But I LOVE THIS SAND and the best parts: it didn’t cost much, it wasn’t a fuss, AND the white color looks so pretty contrasting the beautiful greens of my plants! So happy with my purchase. One of my favorites from amazon so far.

Knatmageddon
Had a houseplant that became home to a colony of fungus gnats, there were thousands of them. My husband and I tried different methods to contain them but nothing was working. Finally we heard about the strategy to put sand over the dirt so we purchased this sand and poured it on top of the dirt. My husband said it was like armageddon for the gnats as they tried to escape as he buried them beneath pounds of sand. It's been a week and I'd say that 95% of them have been eliminated. My only gripe with this is that you could probably purchase more sand for cheaper at a home improvement store, the store in our area replaced the sand with Xmas trees so we were out of luck. This sand was effective though so it's only fair to give it 5 stars.

White sand turns brownish
The concept of this sand making it harder for small flies to live in it has kinda worked. It does not stop them from living in the sand but you will see them if you get a light color. I chose white sand which turned brown. All my pots do not look a pretty white they look dirty. You do need to learn how to figure if the plant needs water when it is covered in sand. Unless you order a lot of sand to really cover the plant it’s impossible to not have bits of dirt. So make sure you order extra sand so really cover the top of your soil. Overall I think it is stopping this horrible influx of these flies but has not stopped them. As I said the light brown is a little disturbing but I’ve come to accept it. I would not put them around a plant that is fuzzy like a African violet. I cannot get the sand off the fuzzy leaves. I won’t say recommended I will leave it yo you once you know what will happen.

Works like a charm!
A potted plant in my office was the culprit of a pretty bad gnat infestation. I tried the sprays, the lights, and the sticky things, and lost every battle. After a quick Google search, I came across this sand, and let me tell you BUY IT! I went from squishing at least 30 gnats a day to MAYBE a dozen OVERNIGHT!This sand saved my sanity, my plant, and won the war!

It's good sand, but it's not white
First of all, this sand isn't really white, it's more of a peachy color. It comes in a small, but heavy bag, so I thought I was getting a lot when I read 5 lbs., but 5 lbs. of sand is different from 5 lbs. of something else. I have around a dozen indoor plants in pots ranging from about 4" to 12", but most of them are in give or take 6" pots. I bought this to cover the soil in order to ward off fungus gnats who need damp decomposing material to breed in. The idea is that the sand will drain faster and dry out after watering, fooling the gnats into thinking the pot is unfit to breed in. Realizing how little I was actually getting, I poured a thin layer of sand in some of my pots, maybe about 1/4" deep, covering all the soil in the pot. It looked good at first, but when I water the plant, the sand washes away where the water hits and then mixes a little with particles of soil near the top. Now my pure peach-colored sand is peppered with debris that may attract the gnats again. I don't know if I should have poured a thicker layer of sand or if I'm just not using this product right. The sand seems to be of a high quality. It's fine and has a soft, consistent texture, but it's not white. As long as you're okay with that, you'll probably like it if you're looking for some nice sand. I bet it would be pretty in a terrarium, as long as it doesn't mix with undesirable material.
