Coolerguys Programmable Thermostat Fan Controller Kit for Standard 3pin Fans

There is no noise to this as it is just the thermostat that controls the actual fan, which fan you use is what would make any noise if there was any. This thermostat is extremely easy to set up. I had an issue with the first one that was sent out and Amazon quickly sent out a replacement unit. While waiting for the second unit to arrive I did a little research and realized that the power supply that ships with the thermostat is way under powered. People were leaving reviews say how the fans wouldn’t kick on fully or they were having issues running multiple fans (the thermostat can control up to 4!). The coolerguys fan I have draws .75 amps and the power supply is rated at 1 amp so it should be able to power it, Howe other fan would just get stuck in a loop where it would try to start but then stop half a second later and just go back and forth like that… I looked on coolerguys actual website and saw they also sell a 3 amp power supply for the thermostat. I headed back to Amazon and searched for a 3 amp power supply and found one that was considerably cheaper that on coolerguys website. I ordered that new power supply and both the thermostat and power supply arrived 1 day later. I packaged up the old thermostat and got the new one set up with the higher rated power supply and tested out the fan… it worked perfect!! So I’m guessing the power supply that comes with the thermostat is underpowered, if you spend an extra $10 on a 3 amp power supply you’ll have no issues and could probably run multiple fans with no issues either. Coolerguys might want to include a higher rated power supply to help alleviate this issue 🤷‍♂️. Anyhoo… thermostat works great controlling the fan, which I use to help cool my PS5 that I keep in an entertainment center.

I'm using this in a little network enclosure that I use for my homelab and which I've installed two noctua fans in the top of. This controller was perfect for my use case, however it only has on/off modes and has no fan speed control at all which was a bit disappointing to see. I ended up purchasing noctua pwm fan speed controllers to install in between this and the fans so that I could manually set their speed and reduce the noise level. Overall though this controller has been perfect, I have it turning the fans on when the enclosure reaches 32*C and turning them off when it reaches 30*C. I could go lower if I wanted but the thermals of all of the components within the enclosure have been fine. The only comment I really have for something that could be improved is that I wish the pins at the back for the fans were more spaced out to allow 4 pin connections to connect more easily, I was only able to get them connect to the first and third pin set because of how closely together they are. Luckily I only needed 2 so it didn't matter for my use case but for anyone else who needs all 4 fans having to get 4 pin to 3 pin adapters for this is kind of annoying when it wouldn't be necessary if the pin spacing were a little better on the back of this. Other than that, if you're looking for something to control fans in terms of just turning them off and on based on temperature settings this is a great compact product that is easy to program and quite flexible in how you can do the programming of when to turn each fan on individually.

I had a pre-set version of the Coolerguys thermostat for years, but due to the hot climate it often had the fans constantly turned on in summer. This product completely solves the problem, even more, it allows to turn the fans one by one depending on the temperature, the settings are separate for four fans. Perfection.

I like my music. I like music a lot. I own a Pioneer SC-87, which I use mainly as a pre-amp. It is connected to a QSC GX-7, and this beast of an amplifier connects to the "NUNS" that is what I call them. They are the JBL Studio 590's. I am sure some are saying what a torture with that amplifier. I guess I am at the age where I am saying "what was that hunny?" not by choice as it was the case in my younger years. I like what I have and I want to keep for years to come.Everyone that plays with any components that requires electricity knows it byproduct is heat. This heat that is generated by these components can go higher than ideal temperature for certain parts. Now incase all that so nobody gets shocked by the inner workings of these components, or something dropped in them. I am sure you get the idea.I then read the ideal temp for any receiver is less than < 85 degrees. If not, it reduces the life span by 40% (AudioKarma). As I mentioned before. I like what I have and would like to enjoy for years to come. I also had an Onkyo that the HDMI's stop working because of the amount of heat. Even when sitting in open entertainment system shelf.In looking around DIY projects on how to make one, I found this thermostat controller by cooler guys. This is a very raw controller. In the sense that it is not fancy. It reminds me of the old digital car clocks. So raw in fact that it does not have any marking other than four ports marked 1 through 4 in the back. Which is ok because none of the inputs are the same connector type. For example the power connector is a round, for the fans, they have three prongs and plastic tab to secure the fan connector in place. If you ever played the game when you were a kid, where you put the triangle piece in the triangle hole. The square piece in the square hole. Same concept. If I can figure it out then anyone else can.This controller is connected to two fans: Coolerguys 120x25mm Rear Exhaust Blower Fan 12v with 3pin Connector, Coolerguys 120MM (120X120X25) High Airflow Waterproof IP67 12v Fan. Which you can also find here on Amazon.Here is how I am using the controller and fans. I have programmed the controller to turn on each fan at different temperature stages. The first fan which is the rear exhaust fan turns on first. It starts at 84 degrees and stops at 80 degrees cool down. The second fan which is the high airflow fan is set for 87 degrees and stops at 82 degrees. I was going to complain about the second fan because it is loud. I am not saying jet fighter but enough to be noticed through music. For sure louder than the QSC. The rear exhaust fan is very quiet. The QSC's amplifier fan is actually louder.I have temporary installed it for performance testing. It has been about a week and the controller does what it is meant to do. The display of the controller shows the temperature in Fahrenheit out of the box. Speaking of boxes, the thermostat controller comes with ac adapter and temperature sensor. A metal bracket if not setting the controller in custom work. Fans not included.This is why it works for me: The controller works like it should not missing a beat. It turns on the fan at its set points. The quiet fan turns on first to cool down the receiver. In case the receiver is pushed too hard, the second fan will turn on along side with the first fan. The louder fan acts as an indicator for me that I am pushing the receiver pretty hard. I dont want to be hearing pings, alarms or sirens. I have seen many good driver go by the sound of the engine than by some indicator on the dashboard. Well old school driving when cars had engines, and you can count the wires to what was electrical. Same concept here. I hear the louder fan rev it is an indicator to look at my temp gauge. This helps me determine if I have to let up on the gas or keep it at speed. Since, the the fan is also High flow it will move so much air through the components. Once the temperature has been brought down to the set points within the range of the first, the second fan will stop and the first fan will continue maintaining temperature that I have set.The Display also lets you now how many fans are on. The led lights right above the display also give me a visual of what fans have turned-on. This controller says it can handle four fans. Although other reviewers say at the most three is the capability. My set-up stops at at two fans. I do like the fact that if I ever want to grow this cooling system, I can just add one more fan.Using this in a custom set-up or just stand alone, I would recommend this controller and fans mentioned above.Happy shopping!

Using this to control 5 fans for a 12V inverter, solar charger, and LiFePo4 battery setup under the bed of our RV. Attractive, easy to mount, easy to program, works perfectly. I snipped the wall wart and wired the fan control to a blank slot in my 12V fuse box using a 4A fuse.
