It really is a beautiful wooden board. Pieces are roughly carved but gives an authentic untarnished feel. I am truly grateful this board was available the moment my daughter said she wanted to learn to play

This is, without a doubt, the single worst purchase I have ever made in my life. Normally, I do not write reviews. However, the product that was delivered to me today is so substandard, I have no choice but to "go to town" on this review.Upon opening, it was immediately apparent that the chess board I was holding was not so much a "board", rather a thin layer of cheap plywood. With the thickness of 12 sheets of paper, paint was already chipped and the edges of the board could provide a sliver upon request. Nevertheless, I was eager to get a chess match going with my good friend Corbin who lives down the street. I invited Corbin to meet me in the park for a game of chess, and he said we'll see. We didn't have to see. I attempted to set ALL of the pieces on the board and am STILL ATTEMPTING because ALL of the pieces were not included in my package. I was missing an Ivory Queen and an Ivory Bishop. How am I to proceed? How can I go on?I can't. I will never play chess with this board. That is innevitable. It is not possible. The beginning disadvantage of ivory is great enough to compromise any earnest attempt at a friendly chess game. This product was awful, but the feeling of being two pieces short of a chess set was even worse. I have been personally attacked.

Great price and I would buy several for gifts if the board was printed correctly. Lower left corner should be a black square, labeled A1 with numbers rising going up and letters increasing alphabetically from left to right. The picture in the listing is right, but the boards they send are not. Unfortunately, I want to teach someone how to play and make proper notations on moves. You really can't do that with this board. Thankfully, they let me return it. This is probably why this set is so cheap.

These are big squares and plenty big for the pieces I already own. The set comes with smaller pieces that fit inside the fold up. My pieces are too big for that convenience. I like it anyway.

The chessboard’s black and white coloring is inverted compared to the usual standard, for example A1 and H8 was supposed to be white grids, but is instead black. Also, the board itself when opened up is slightly uneven and not flat, making it not fully flat on a flat surface like a table.

This was an OK chessboard but there were a few things I didn't like.- The locking system on the chessboard was very noisy and loose- The pieces looked very indistinguishable . the queen and king look almost the same.- The felt circle on the bottom comes off very fast- The felt piece is not positioned at the center of the piece- The pieces were of bad quality and keep falling down if not balanced wellI would heavily discourage you if planning to gift this

If I could give more than five stars then I would. The product arrived a lot sooner than expected. I bought it for my daughter and it's her first chess board and she does not want to put it down. Not only is it really well-made, it's especially good for kids or people on the go because of the board folds up and holds all of your pieces. If you're looking for a starting out chess board for yourself or anyone else I highly recommend it.

I’m bummed that this is being sold with the numbers and letters on the axis to help learn, but they’re wrong. It will only hurt a student.

Its a good quality wood chess board. All pieces fit easily back inside without any issue. Board is too large for use on airplanes (except for those riding in the front of the airbus) but otherwise makes a great travel board. I was looking for a good quality entry level board that wasn't too small and crowded and this has fit the bill perfectly.

This item is not as pictured. The picture shows a properly notated board with the white square in the bottom right corner as it should be and letters across the bottom as they should be. When it arrived it had letters across the bottom, but the orientation of the squares was incorrect. There was a black Square in the bottom right corner. You can set it up and play obviously, by putting the white square in the bottom right corner, but then your notation is off because you have numbers across the bottom and letters in the ranks. Not at all useful for a kid trying to learn proper chess, with proper notation. Disappointing because the picture product is actually accurate. For the price, the craftsmanship is not too bad, although the wood is incredibly lightweight and delicate. But for the price, being under $20, it represents decent value if it is a correct board. Not being correct board, it doesn't represent good value, and the craftsmanship being not so great is immaterial.

The design is overall very cheap but that this price point it is to be expected.It is a chess set and useful for someone just beginning, especially when that person takes the game to school. I would not be upset if the kids ended up losing pieces.Pieces fit inside the board which acts as a carrying case, so useful for travelling.

My daughter ordered this chess board to teach me how to play chess. The board and pieces are smaller than they looked in the Amazon photo, but they serve the purpose. I actually found it easier to see the whole board, as opposed to a larger board. It packs up neatly when you're done.

Seems like a decent board. Except they sent 3 bishops and 1 knight for white with my board.
