I read Romeo and Juliet as part of my project to read the literature that I had been assigned to read at school but didn't. I've read all five plays that I was assigned in high school and have now endeavored to read as many of the plays as possible. I've read these in Folger editions and to my surprise I think that I am learning something. As the common introductions in these editions state, in reading the plays one will become familiar with Shakespeare's language and the semantics and poetry will begin to come out. I have found that the case for me. The Folger edition of the play contains a short essay on the play from a modern perspective, It is from this that I learned about the contrast in the play between the individualistic idea of romantic love and the more traditional view of marriage as a connection between two families. Juliet loves Romeo individualistically. Her family arranges for her to wed Paris and her father demands that she do so or be expelled from the family. The individualistic love, the Folger essay links to Petrarch. The essay provides a reading of the play for a modern audience of the issue of female autonomy. It provides an historical background, that in the Renaissance, women were subject to the will of their family and had no independent volition. The lack of female autonomy and the consequent submission to the will of the family is matched in the play in the behavior of the males in the conflict between the two families. The males, outside of Romeo, engage in constant threatening behavior with males of the other family. This leads to bloody fights with weapons up to causing death. The males have no real autonomy in the feud but act out roles dictated by their membership in the families. It is only Romeo, as a male of one of these families, in the play who counsels restraint. Juliet’s conflict with her expected role in family behavior is matched here by that of Romeo. The tragedy of the play lies in the deaths of Romeo and Juliet as caused by forces outside of their control. It is the social expectations of their time that cause the disorder and death in the play. Death and disorder caused by mismatched social expectations are of relevance in the politics of today.
