Q: We are unable to release the pedal straps to adjust size. We understand they are a popper action but do not release. Have we overlooked something?

I don't know. the indicator is not great. keep moving to different things! I usually ignore it.

I had the same problem, just put a new battery in.

Q: why's it constantly squeaking? so annoying, especially when it was stated to be silent

I can only suggest it needs a little lubrication with a light oil. Could just simply be the pedals?
