IS this CDR or CD RW & DVD-R or DVD-RW (or both) AND does it burn and play BOTH cd's and DVD'S? (Some don't and I need one that does) Thanks SO MUCH!

It will burn (and play) cd's and dvd's (including dual layer - I burned my first one yesterday). The box states DVD + R SL/DL, DVD + RW/-RW, DVD-RAM, CD-R/RW. Hope this helps.

Is this compatible with Windows 8.1?

I know iam super late to this question but to anyone with this problem.... windows 8.1 is the steaming pile of crap here not the device. Upgrade to windows 10 already!!

what is m disk support

It means that you may use a M-Disk with this device. The M-Disk or Millenia Disk is an optical disc that provides more media preservation (documents, pictures, recordings or any digital data). Just to piggyback off another response, the short answer is "yes". I'll elaborate below, for those that want to read on:LG's website only advertises support for up to Windows 8.1, so I was a little nervous when i bought this along with a brand new HP Spectre x360 for my wife. The Spectre x360 shipped with Windows 8.1, which I/we didn't want, and took the free upgrade to Win10 immediately. However, my wife needs/needed this drive in order to install certain software on her new PC, as well as (eventually) to RIP/burn music and recordings.When I connect this device to her new ultrabook via USB, and then insert a program installation disc, the install program won't load automatically. The standard "we detect a device, would you like us to use it" message doesn't pop up. So I don't believe it's *fully supported* and *fully functional* (yet, although I'd expect some sort of firmware update from LG at some point, but that's obviously not a guarantee), but so far, I've been able to, fairly easily, use it to do what she needed to be able to do with it (namely, install programs that she needs for work via this drive). Without an "auto-start" feature, I have to navigate to the drive using windows explorer, view what's on the disc, and then manually click to fire up the executable/install file myself, but once I do, the disc reads, the program installs, and my wife is off-to-the-races with her new Windows 10 laptop, thanks to this drive.But, the long answer is, it hasn't once *failed* to read a disc and operate properly for us. It works. You just have to be able to navigate to the drive and do whatever it is you're trying to do manually... not sure if that's a universal experience, or just specific to us. Like I said, hopefully an HP update will make this a little more *plug-and-play* in the near future, but for now, if you like this drive's size-price-feature combination, like I did, and you need it to work with Win10, fear not. It'll work.

What I Like - A very streamlined, slim and sleek looking DVD burner. Easy USB hookup. Worked instantly with my Windows PC and burning software. It also comes with burning software. Definitely a good value and cost if you’re looking to get a burner. Very fast speed to complete a disc. What I Don’t Like - Nothing yet.

This external DVD-RW drive does just what I need it to. In an age where optical media is becoming obsolete, I'm glad I can still buy one of these, and for such a good price! I have had zero failed burns with many types of media thus far, including M-Discs. For the price, this is cheaper than some meals. I'm very satisfied and will be buying another as a backup! I highly recommend!

Recently bought a new digital audio player for travelling with, and wanted to make a serious start digitising my CDs for use with that. This little device is cheap and very effective. It has only refused to rip one of over forty CDs fed into it so far (an older disc at that). Works very well in combination with the Nero CD Ripper (freely available from Microsoft, though if you have a lot of music to back-up, well worth paying the upcharge for it to automatically do all the titling. It very occasionally gets it wrong with an older, more obscure album, but I've already saved a huge amount of time with it). Very simple operation for this CD player, no additional drivers or power leads required. Works straight out of the box with Windows 11. Have not tried it with a DVD yet, but I'm sure it's fine there - I bought to for audio use. Not massively robust, but for home use and not dropping / throwing it around, plenty robust. Very good buy at this price.
