So very pleased with this gigantic, underrated, gem of an omnibus!!! First of all, THANK YOU AMAZON. People love to shred the reviews when they can, but not often enough do ya see reviews saying how mind-blowing fast these packages arrive... my SPIDER-MAN "ORIGIN OF THE HOBGOBLIN hardcover omnibus arrived within 2 days days of purchase, was a sealed copy, and did not have one flaw. This book is immense. Massive. choc full of the most underrated run on Spider-Man of all time. To those that know, it's not underrated at all. Like myself, many bigtime fans of Spidey, this run rivals Stan Lee's legendary years on the title. I would say Lee's edges it clearly because nearly every issue of his run has a first appearence of every iconic Spider-man friend AND foe. Steve Ditko is my favorite artist ever (he did art of stan Lee books, before John Romita took over, and didn't miss a beat. #note: ditko is not the artist in this book. I'm merely showing how well this run stands up to the legendary original). All that said... THIS run on the title, at its core, features John Romita Jr becoming a cherished artist right before our eyes, on a title that his father hit so many home runs on. It is Roger Stern that makes this entire tome tick though. He grew up a Spider-man fan, and it shows on every single page. He just GETS Peter Parker to the core. This harckens back to the age of Spidey that I so very miss... when Aunt May was still in the heart of Peter's life. Back to an era where Peter was shed of the Love Life that was so up and down as Mary Jane Watson had his mind jumbled, happy one day, troubled the next. MJ DOES, to the shock of Peter, appear on these pages for the first time in the 4 years prior to Stern taking over, but she has her own life going, as does Mr Parker. Here in these tales, Peter is shed of relationships (MOSTLY), AND we get to see him back flying high above the city, getting back to his character development as Spider-man. Learning himself all over again. Stern is masterful in his portrail of Both Peter Parker's personal life outside of being a young hero, as well as when he does don the costume. We get to the days when Spidey was full of witty Quips, an artist in the air, yet also begins to discover his detective skills as well. Leading to new horrors, trials and tribulations. We get both auras wrapped in one. This Omnibus is a collection of 2 different Stern titles, PETER PARKER, THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #'S 43-61 and #85, and AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #206, 224-252 + Annual 16-17, also small pieces of material from PPTSSM annual 3, Amazing Annual 15, Web of Spider-man Annual 3, and last but not least WHAT IF? (1977) #34!!! More than 50+ issues of web slinging action, at an all time new, and great price!!! Get your's before it goes out of print, which we know is a trend of Marvel's, especially when it comes to Spider-man collections. What you are mostly grabbing this masterpiece for, is the Amazing Spider-man run collected inside (worth the price of admission alone), but the buyer is getting treated to the SPECTACULAR Spider-man series that is so underrated. Don't get me wrong... it has a bit of a slow start to the PPTSSM title, Stern was stepping in for Denny O'Neil at the time (rest his soul), whom is much more beloved for his Batman, and Green Arrow/Green Lantern titles back then, titles that he was perfectly fitted on. He didn't quite capture the essence of the young spirited Peter whom was learning on the job, as well as having a rough go in his personal life full of growing pains and financial missteps. Stern steps in nearly mid O'Neil story, had to actually finish an arc that Denny had already began... it was a couple pages of overly wordy, stretched dialogue (kinda like my review thus far lol), Roger was trying to end already began adventures, while spinning in his own input on the character. It only takes a couple issues to get going though. And when it does, Peter Parker, The Specracular Spider-man was shed into a fantastic web of character development. I will say, let it be known that the Spectacular Spidey comics were purposely void of nearly all the characters that Spider-man is known for... it is more centered around Peter's real life growing pains as he learns to roll with the punches of regular life outside of the suit. Finding a more steady job career, stuff like that. When inside the suit, he spends his time re-connecting to his love of just shooting webs atop the city, while doing so, we get to see him encounter all new villians he has yet to meet prior. Theres not alot of familiarity when it comes to the villians nor friends in this early section... to some, that is at times, less endearing... I was hesitant. Worrying that it would be less engaging. Being 100% honest, my worry turned into to what I actually love about this title. It keeps Spidey on his toes. It's much less of a drag. It feels like he is a wide eyed young hero again. Trust me, give it a whirl. You will see characters and tales begin to set up the phenomenal Amazing Spider-man run that begins about halfway through this Omnibus! The Amazing Spider-man Roger Stern/Romita Jr storyline is possibly my favorite set of Spidey arcs of all time. It is Marvel Comics to the core. We switch from Peter meeting new, crazy characters nearly every chapter of Spectacular Spider-man, to now diving deeper into the mystery of a couple well known villians. 2 issues of the return of Black Cat, whom begins to reclaim property within Spideys heart and mind again, in a way that only the Black Cat can! We get more run ins with Wilson Fisk the Kingpin! Possibly the biggest surprise to have been collected in this Omnibus is the "Nothing Can Stop the Juggernaut" 2 chapter, mind blowing story arc that is in my top 3 spidey stories ever. Never before have we seen Peter stretched beyond himself, needing to dig deeper than ever before. Against an opponent with more strength than Spidey has ever endured. Then there is the Hobgoblin himself. Possibly the most intriguing mystery of this era of Spider-man was the longevity of readers being kept at the edge of our seats when trying to discover whom the man is behind the New version the Goblin. GREEN Goblin is my favorite marvel counterpart of all time, and even I will say, the Hobgoblin is a much more twisted, maniacal menace than his predecessor! Folks should dive into this run on Amazing Spider-man and see if ya can solve the mystery of whom the man has been! This is the orgin story. And what a doozy it is! It's like a mysterious detective story spun in with a classic legendary marvel hero story in its very prime! You won't be disappointed! Try and hurry to get these gigantic beauty of a book before it possibly joins many other omnis that sit out of print for too long. At this price, you're getting a DANDY!!
