I have been consistently using Doctor's Best Brain Magnesium L-Threonate with Magtein (150 mg, 60 count) for several weeks. As I have been impressed with the results and the overall quality of this supplement, I felt it was time to write a review. The main advertised feature is the support of cognitive function using the patented Magtein formula (Magnesium L-Threonate), which is specifically designed for better brain absorption. After several weeks of daily use, I can say I feel an improvement in mental acuity and focus. It has become a part of my daily supplement regimen because of these benefits. Unlike some other supplements, I've experienced no negative side effects or the common magnesium-related GI upset. The product is very easy to incorporate into a daily routine. The recommended dosage of two capsules daily is clear and easy to follow. The gelatin capsules are easy to swallow for me, (though I have seen this mentioned as a drawback in other reviews) and have no residual taste or aftertaste. Every time I have ordered, the product has arrived with excellent packaging and a secure safety seal. Pros: Noticeable Cognitive Boost: Helped significantly with mental acuity and focus. Highly Absorbable Formula (Magtein): Effective at crossing the blood-brain barrier. Zero Side Effects: Has not caused me any gastrointestinal (GI) distress. Excellent Quality: Arrives consistently with secure packaging and safety seals. Cons (Area for Improvement): Cost/Value: The one major drawback for me is the price point. While the product's performance and quality are excellent, it is a bit expensive compared to other supplements. I wish it was sold in a larger size (e.g., a 90 or 120 count bottle) or offered at a better price per capsule, as this would make long-term use more economical. I would recommend this product to anyone looking to support their focus and mental clarity, especially if they are sensitive to other forms of magnesium. This may be a case of getting what you pay for ie., a premium supplement that has shown results for me.

I am continuing to research and review forms of magnesium. I believe Doctor's Best may be the highest quality product I can purchse through Amazon. Magnesium L Threonate (MLT) is a novel form of magnesium.. The bioavailability via the Blood Brain Barrier may be exceptionally therapeutic for some and may prove problematic for others. As with all electrolytes, patients should be aware of problems related to elevated Mg levels (hypermagnesemia). Magnesium levels may need to be measured via blood tests given certain medical conditions as well as keeping a log of energy, mood and sleep. There are far fewer professionals/providers with the knowledge or willingness to moniter and advise than there are patients taking supplements. I had a conversation recently with a neuropsychiatrist regarding the promising studies of MLT for a number of issues but was warned of the potential for increased anxiety (mania). Supplements are a highly unregulated industry and we often take them as "drugs" for therapeutic responses as big pharma products without all that goes into making a drug as safe as possible (at a profit, of course). Not getting into that discussion; just saying.... I subtracted one star for the very large size capsule. I have problems swallowing this large product. I need to take them carefully, individually and with the right fluid+volume as well as proper head/neck position to be sure it does not lodge in the pharynx(back of throat)/throat/epigastric (lower esophagus to stomach entry) area. I take a wide variety of supplements and medications by the handful without incident. This is the most difficult for me to take. I have had to use choking "Heimlich maneuver"s or addtl food/beverage to dislodge from a panic feeling or push the capsule to drop free into my stomach. I have considered buying smaller gelatin capsules to divide this into a size I can handle (PIA). I continue to look for similar high quality MLT sold in smaller mg/caps. The episodes are very unpleasant.

I was going to give this two weeks before I review, but my husband and I noticed it right away that it was helping. So maybe it's because we also take another brand of magnesium that we have some level of that in our bodies anyway. Regardless, our minds seem much clearer and a little sharper. I have read to give it two weeks, but we started this on the 21st, so I'll try to update later after several weeks. Here's the only thing. Doctor's Best has great products, but this is a bit expensive for us. We are both older, and we also take other things as well, so that is always money out of our pockets. Next time we're trying another brand that has excellent ratings on it like Doctor's Best, but there is more of it. We're going to try that next. If it doesn't work as well, we'll come back to this product because we already know it's good. I already take other Doctor's Best supplements, and I know how well they work. Too bad some companies don't have a senior citizen discount. That would help. Well, I know some do, but most do not have that. 2/3/2015: I've updated, but for some reason my update didn't go through. What I wanted to say is that I have insomnia, and just about a week ago have started sleeping better than I have in years. I'm thinking that it may be this product, plus it is seeming that I am sleeping much deeper. Not only that, I woke up Sunday morning and was feeling great, so much energy. Guess this stuff is working in more ways than just our brains.

Magtein (MgT) may ONLY give FALSE HOPE to those who suffer with cognitive/memory impairment. BECOME EDUCATED: With regards to treating Alzheimer's/memory, many other natural compounds have proven success across "multiple 3rd party independent human studies" listed in the Alzheimer's section of: The Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine Third Edition This book was published in 2012 and therefore, later studies and better extracted natural compounds would not be included however, I believe this is the best place to start. Regarding this product, Magtein, beyond the hype, unless you dig deeply, you are unlikely aware of the below facts. FACTS: 1. MgT was designed at MIT. 2. Dr. Guosong Liu was a professor at MIT & received $5,000,000 in research funding 3. The results of MIT's $5,000,000 research funding resulted in: - a patent by a "private company" - a product of high profitability (retailing at "47 times" the average sales price of normal magnesium) 4. MgT is owned/patented by Magceutics, Inc and marketed under the name MAGTEIN 5. All MgT products sold are patented MAGTEIN proprietary compounds 6. MAGTEIN is the sole and only product owned by Magceutics, Inc 7. Dr. Guosong Liu is the co-founder of Magceutics, Inc 8. After patenting MgT, Dr. Guosong Liu moved from MIT to Tsinghua University in Beijing 9. The “Sole” & “Only” two mouse studies claiming cognitive benefit were performed at Tsinghua 10. The only 2 published studies worldwide are co-authored by Dr. Guosong Liu 11. The first mouse study was published yet, later “retracted for errors” & republished 12. To date, not a single independent research facility/university worldwide has chosen to investigate MgT's potential benefit independently 13. A Human Study is underway at Standford, yet with listed collaborator: “MAGCEUTICS, INC” 14. Amazon's Top Product Reviewers' reviews provide detailed analysis of “competing” MAGTEIN products however, not the medical research supporting/denying potential benefit. 15. MgT's patented, proprietary compound costs 47.8 times as much as normal magnesium. Milligram per milligram Cost Comparison vs normal Magnesium: a. NOW Foods Magnesium Capsules, 180 Capsules / 400mg at $7.68 180 capsules x 400 mg = 72,000 mg or 72 grams Cost $7.68 / 72 grams = $0.11 / gram b. Doctor's Best Brain Magnesium Vegetarian Capsules, 75 mg, 60 Count at $23.66 60 capsules x 75 mg = 4,500 mg or 4.5 grams Cost $23.66 / 4.5 grams = $5.26 / gram c. MgT Cost / Normal Magnesium Cost = $5.26 / $0.11 = 47.8 times more expensive 16. In general what happens when a new compound is found to possibly have health benefits is: a. it draws the attention of the research communities worldwide b. others seek to retest it and also test it for different disorders even if first by mouse studies 17. What is most disturbing is that of all other worldwide medical research facilities and universities targeting treatments for cognitive disfunction, Alzheimer's, etc - not a single one decided to do a 6 month mouse study to validate/deny the findings of MgT. Strange. Mouse studies are low cost and dementia/alzheimer's researchers worldwide are nearly incessant in researching new possibilities for treatment yet, NOT ONE has chosen not to explore MgT themselves. 18. In view of the above and similar to all small scale studies, without independent 3rd party research studies to confirm, MgT maybe "highly" subject to bias, chance, or likely PROFITEERING. 19. Although there is a conflict of interest in the above human study at Stanford, their results are to be published in mid summer 2016 (however many studies don't publish ontime) 20. Reviewers who “rave” about this product's benefit to restfulness/sleep can achieve the exact same result at 1/47th of the cost from any form of magnesium. 21. PLACEBO EFFECT DEFINITION: A remarkable phenomenon in which a placebo (a fake treatment, an inactive substance like sugar, distilled water, or saline solution) -- can sometimes improve a patient's condition simply because the person has the expectation that it will be helpful. 22. Review, research, and confirm the above and decide for yourself. If you find my review "helpful," would you please click "yes" below so that families of those suffering from Alzheimer's/Dementia are made aware of this information ?

As both a physician and a cancer patient, I have tried to use this magnesium l-threonate preparation because of some intuitive guess that it could be helpful because of its claimed ability to pass through the blood brain barrier to help with cognition. Who knows whether it is really effective, anecdotes by "reviewers?" Of course, I know very well I am in no position to be able to verify this claim using scientific guidelines, because of the absence of long term studies, unbiased information. I am well aware that the widespread belief of perceived benefits of unregulated multibillion dollar market of dietary supplements, all unproven and untested, sold to a sanctimous community of users of products, marketed not for their proven intrinsic value, but rather because of perception of some hidden knowledge that they have which is kept from the uninformed public by "conventional medicine." On the other hand, conventional medicine has been nearly completely corporatized and monetized, with physicians, largely demoralized, consumed by non-patient related paperwork to one sixth of their time, having lost their role as guardians of patients' health to a consolidated "health care industry," which incentivises them to to deny time and resources to their patients while the corporation absolves themselves from all of the responsibility while retaining all of the control. Big Pharma's pervasive advertising campaigns in the US, which alone of all countries in the world, is allowed to hawk their products to the general public pushes only the most profitable and exclusively available prescription drugs at much higher prices to consumers unequipped to evaluate their merit over equivalent generics, again in a uniquely unregulated corporate, monetized environment. Additionally , availability and costs of these drugs are controlled by private health insurance benefit programs subsidized by government, which can minimize their cost by leveraging formularies and obtaining discounted prices, discouraging the best and most exspensive drugs for the sickest patients on "tier levels"(now, 5 levels) with highest copayments, and passing on most of the higher cost to Medicare D, which again is prohibited by law to pay only overly inflated list prices. These costs are increasing being passed onto beneficiaries( Modern Healthcare.12/4/14). New and growing premiums for Medicaid beneficiaries have limited access to care. In the meantime, Health Care insurers and their CEO's are the big winners, with profits and stock prices soaring in all 4 major insurers. Insurance executive pay whose taxes are paid for by the corporations, average 5.4 million in 2013. (KaiserHealth News, 8/27/14). Pay hikes jumped for CEO'S 24.2%. IN 2012 with compensation averaging hikes of 50% in even small to moderate sized Health Care systems, This is the real hidden truth about American Health Care, that the public is duped into believing is better than government paid single party programs in the rest of the world (by last reckoning US was 37th ) is by far the most exspensive (twice per capita than other industrialized country) least efficient (31% of health care spending for administrative overhead), least inclusive, and intrudes into the electoral process by unlimited spending for corrupted electoral campaigns. Hey people, what if we redirected all the wasted premiums, subsidies to executive salaries, marketing departments, investor profits, incredibly complex private insurance plans, billing departments, billion dollar EMR contractors, into a single unified health care stream, providing quality coverage for all citizens, with the interests of people not corporations being the priority.
