Q: I'm concerned that over time dirt and grime will become visible inside the lower compartment. Can it be cleaned?

Yes. It can be cleaned. The blade holder lifts out allowing access to the clear portion of the holder.

Q: Is the bottom weighted? Any chance the whole thing could tip over?

The entire block is made of a heavy duty plastic that is much heavier than I expected. I am not at all concerned that it is going to tip over and I have over 10 knives stored in it. I have a 9 yr old so am hyper-vigilant with regard to safety and I feel very confident this item is safe.

Q: Can the little slot expand to fit a honing steel?

Yes. The 'slots' are actually continuous zigzag and they will expand enough for a standard honing steel. We also keep meat forks in it.

Q: what is the maximum blade width and length that will fit in the slots? thanks

OK so length is up to 8" and width is 2.5" thanks Lucas
