I just purchased this cot and the side rails would not go in with out a huge ordeal. Before I send it back is this how it always is?

I also struggled getting the side rails in the first time. I then realized that there is a pull "tab" next to the hole that the rails enter through. Using one hand pull on this "tab" and with the other hand tuck the end of the side rail in the hole. Once I figured this out it became pretty easy.

Are there any instructions or recommendations to getting the cot back in the bag?

Fold all the legs down and alternate the feet so all the feet aren't on one side. Then fold the cot in half (head to feet). I forgot the rest, but fold one or two more times so that it's the length of the bag. Put all the legs on then roll it up. Should fit in the bag.

Is there a simple way to insert the side rails?

Yes! Assemble both rails to have them ready, then grab one of them and start inserting it from the open end, then move the actual cloth in the opposite direction progresively, in small increments, while holding the rods stationary through the cloth.
