Detailed review of this product vers HTI-19
At the time of this review the price for these were $491 for the HTI-19 and about $1575 for the E5.Craftsmanship & Comfort: Right off the bat you can tell the difference in assembly quality.E5: Better pistol grip, hard carrying case.HTI: Feels more "toy like" has protective pouch with carrying strap.Ease of use: Both photo taking is "point & click," however the HTI-19 asks you every time if you want to save. E5 just saves.User Interface & buttons: HTI-19 menus are a little tricky but you can get used to it. The SELECT and ENTER are obscurely translated. What does select mean to you? "select between these things" or "select the option your cursor is on"? To view your photos you have to navigate through menus with no image preview. E5 Buttons are much simpler. Easy to go right to your photos by hitting the "play" button. Also has image previews.Boot up time before use:Hti-19: About 13 secondsE5: About 4 secondsThermal Camera quality: Both claim to have a "thermal resolution" of 320x240. E5 IR images are more defined than the HTI-19. E5 saves a normal photo (648x480) at the same time as IR. HTI has 5 photo modes where progressively stronger thermal data is overlayed onto the raw photo. One click on E5 gets you 2 photos where the HTI requires 4 clicks. (since it asks you if you want to save each time)Distance detail: HTI really tries but clarity goes to the E5. Distance in photos are about 25 feet.Photo retrieval: Both can be connected to your computer via USB. E5 offers wifi/wifi direct although I haven't been able to figure that out. (haven't read the manual either)Conclusion: HTI-19 is a good budget thermal camera for fun + more. But if you want the professional look and feel then the E5 with more features is a better choice.

Hugely useful for home improvement
I'd been looking at getting something like but but struggling to justify the $2000 price tag. When it was reduced by nearly 40% for Black Friday I decided to bite and haven't regretted it for a minute. The only thing I sometimes wonder is whether I should have dropped the extra cash and bought the E8 with its higher thermal resolution. My application is home improvement. I'm renovating a big old barn of a house that goes through heating oil like nobody's business and need to figure out which parts need insulation with the greatest urgency. It's no exaggeration to say this thing can see through walls. Where old blown cellulose insulation has settled, leaving gaps at the top, this thing can see the difference. It can see where the studs are, given I don't have continuous insulation anywhere and get a bit of thermal bridging. It can see that one section of my exterior wall is insulated and the next section is not, even before pulling down the walls to install insulation panels and replace the ancient horsehair plaster walls.Once walls are pulled down and the inner surface of the exterior wall is exposed it's still hugely useful, but you may need to get closer to the walls to get maximum benefit. If you've got gaps in the walls, it will find them because they will show up blue. To an extent you can feel for drafts by licking the back of your hand and running it over the walls but that only works if you have an actual draft. The E6 can help find areas that are cold, enabling you to investigate further. While I'm renovating I'm taking thermal images every morning to see whether the previous day's work had as much effect as I hoped. One thing to be aware of is that it is hugely sensitive. If you touch something it will pick up the extra heat that was transferred from your hands. If you're adjusting fiberglass without gloves, it will look like you've got warm patches when really it's just the areas you handled. It can be slightly tedious to use outside because if you get a large enough area of the viewfinder that looks past your subject (typically a house) then it will sense that area as being -40 degrees and adjust the scale accordingly. You can use a manual scale, and you can adjust the images with a tablet or PC later. Using a manual scale can be a little bothersome - it would be nice to have regularly used settings that you can just select right away.Overall I'm really glad I bought this. I truly expect it to pay for itself in my home alone within a couple of years, maybe less.
