Japanese product, works like a combination of crayons and colored pencils. Last forever and comes with a super cute case for storage!

All my students back in Japan used these all the time. I find them to be great to use and really were just purchased for nostalgic purposes. The colors are bright and the best part of this set is that they erase! The packaging comes with it's own sharpener and eraser (which is a plus) but I recommend a more professional eraser to really erase the color off. They give me the impression of a really professional crayon. Regular crayons, have a certain finish when your coloring but these tend to fill in those gaps and don't feel as waxy as the Crayolas.

I didn't need to buy this Sakura Coupy set on Amazon because I've have my set for OVER 40 years, yes, no joke. I brought out my set tonight to give to my teenaged son and told him as a child in Japan, I treasured this Sakura-Coupy set and here it is, some 40 yrs later, still vibrant as ever. These are hyper-pigmented color pencils and whatever wax they are using in these are hardy, sturdy and smooth - when you color on the paper, it does not leave gaps and streaks of colors like regular wax crayons; the colors are compact and solid on paper. The sticks themselves are hardy and sturdy, not flimsy by any means. They have survived 100+ degrees in a storage shed for years on end and still come out strong; they have not melted or bent. I had a bit of whitish mold on the tip of one pencil out of 30 but I scraped it off and voila! no problems. I am not sure if the new Coupy formula is the same, but if it is, buy it....you will not be disappointed!

I had coupy pencils as a child and bought some for my five year old daughter who is obsessed with all things art and drawing. They have a nice feel in your hand, sharpen fairly easily (much more easily than regular crayons or colored pencils), and can achieve the look of crayon with the precision of colored pencil (plus somewhat erasable if you don't press very hard). They stand up well in a child's sometimes too tight grip - we've had them six months and only one has broken when my three year old intentionally snapped it.
