Probably the best introductory DAX / Power BI book to learn from!
I spent about a year learning how to use Power BI by reading blog posts and watching YouTube videos. It wasn't until I read this book that it all finally clicked. In fact, I would say that if I had read this book on day one, it would have saved me about a year of fumbling around! Matt has a very down-to-earth teaching style. His lessons are very practical, and I love that he has plenty of exercises to test your knowledge right after he introduces a new topic (complete with answers at the end of the book). He says many times in the book that you need to complete the exercises to understand the material, and that just reading isn't enough. I believe him! I originally learnt from the second edition of the book, but I bought this third edition about a year later for a refresher. The page count has increased from 186 to 288. I thought the 2/e did a great job of teaching the material, but the extra 100 pages in the 3/e really helped flesh out the concepts. I found myself nodding along at the explanations, and was particularly impressed with his descriptions of how the DAX engine works and how best to think through the calculations. Matt really stuffs a lot of tips and best practices in this book. You can tell that he regularly teaches this material to students in the way that he has honed his explanations and analogies between editions. If you are using this book to self-study, I would say that on the first read through you are likely to internalize ~85% with some practice. Come back 3 months later, and you'll find the remaining ~15% finally makes sense and cements your knowledge. In summary, I think this is the best book I've read so far in introducing Power BI to a new user. It's also a fantastic book to re-read after you've been practicing your skills for a few months. Kudos, Matt!

Great book
After reading this book, I can hold my own in any power bi conversation. The book is great at explaining the "why" in easy to understand terms. It also does a great job at explainIng best practices for setting up your data. What I like most is the author quickly explains a concept and then gives you a practice session to try it out. It's great if you learn by doing. This truly is more of a workbook than a textbook. This has been the only resource I've found to use this format for dax. I only wish there was a second version for more complicated measures.

Great learning tool
This book provides a sample database and works you through a long list of basic function examples. The author was very methodical and complete in his instructional methodology. It is he best book I have purchased for entry-level DAX and a bit beyond.

Great book! Very informative. Easy to follow.
I'm a heavy Power BI and Power Pivot user. For awhile, I’ve been familiar with many DAX functions. But now, I have a much better idea of what’s going on “under the hood”. For example, I didn’t know about CUBE formulas or the concept of Context Transition. And now, I’m better able to integrate #PowerBI, #PowerPivot and #Excel. I highly recommend this book to anyone working with BI using Excel, Power Pivot, or Power BI.
