The Fiskars works GREAT! The profile of the blade makes this work ...
I have an older Snow and Neally hatchet and hatchet sized splitting mall. I have finally hammer the life out of the handle of the mall and purchased the Fiskars 17 inch Splitting Axe to replace it. The Fiskars works GREAT! The profile of the blade makes this work really well. The first 1/4" of the blade is sharpened pretty much like an axe. Then the grind of the rest of the blade resembles a mall. Works great. I use it for splitting logs that have been split once already (about 6"-8" included circle). This works perfect for splitting them into smaller starter logs for building a bed of coals fast in the stove or for burning when not a lot of heat output is required. I'm very accurate with a one handed tool like this, and with the catch at the end of the handle to keep it from sliding out of your hand, it feels more like your wielding a weapon than using a tool. Definitely worth the price.
