Drive is recognized by Windows and Linux but will not read ANY type of disc inserted. Spins up and down as long as a disc is in the drive. Do yourself a favor and spend $5 more on something that might work.UPDATE: After searching again, it turns out that just about every drive from $14 to $30 is the same exact cheap unit with rebranding and slight changes to the top of the case. Look at the bottom of any of them and they are IDENTICAL. About 7 out of 100 appear to be defective. Look at the reviews - YMMV

I ordered this 6 months ago (Feb 2021) when I realized my internal drive wasn't working, and it stayed in its box until I needed it. Plugged it in and it spins but nothing plays. After some finnagling around, I read the description again and WAY DOWN AT THE END OF PRODUCT DESCRIPTION it says,"NOTE: Customer’s using Windows 10 are advised to Install VLC Media player to Play DVD and CD."Well I have VLC Media Player, so I opened it and found the file. The VIdeo scenes were divided, so I had to choose from several, and then it played ONLY the Video portion (NO AUDIO). Also, it will NOT play CD's. The product is described as "CD/DVD Drive" but on the actual item it says "DVD R/RW".Too bad there's a lot of crap on Amazon and you have to be wary. 20 bucks wasted.

I don't know about DVD's but it says on this page that it plays cds. It does NOT. My only reason for buying this was to put music from cds onto my computer. Now I have to take care of the issue of sending this back, getting my refund, finding a new product that will actually perform its specified duties, then waiting for the new product to arrive... I appreciate none of this. I think I will just purchase something from a physical store that I have to walk into so that I don't have to worry about getting another Frankenstein's ghetto monster of a disc drive.

This was so easy to use just plugged it into my sons computer and right away he was able to put in the game and get started playing. Also great for playing dvds on his computer or laptop. He did not have a disk drive so this car in very handy. Especially since he got a computer game for christmas and could not play it until we got one of these. I love how portable it is , lightweight and easy to carry in a backpack.

I had one similar to this and it worked for about a year and then the door wouldn't open. This one played a disk twice and now doesn't work any more. For $20 it's not worth sending back, I just want one that works. Maybe I should just buy the most expensive one in that style. They're very handy. My last one might have to be turned upside down or sat on it's edge to play certain disks but it ran.
