Fun game for the current price (under $10)
The game follows the same format as the original Tropico. You are the recently installed dictator of a small Caribbean island. Build stuff, make money, try to keep everyone happy. (see my Tropico review for more details)The game installs without problems. You have to enter the code from the printed manual before you can start playing. You don't have to go online.Changes from original game: 2 new factions cars (have to build garages) several new buildings (zoo, ferris wheel, city dump, etc.) an annoying radio announcer who complains about everything you do some new edicts to issueThe major change is you now have an avatar to represent yourself. Select male or female, hair, outfit, glasses, etc. There is very limited customization. You have just one male or female body and face. There are a few options for hair style and outfits. (you keep the same outfit for 20 - 50 years or however long the scenario lasts) You can move yourself to a contruction site to speed up the workers, go to a factory to boost production, etc.Overall it is a fun tycoon game. The current price (under $10) is reasonable. Play it too long and it gets repetitive but it is the type of game you can come back to and replay.Note to the designers: In its current format there is not any reason to come out with another sequel. If you converted it to a role playing game with a truly customizable character (as in Oblivion) and a fully explorable 3D world, that would be a different story. Imagine going to the casino and gambling, decorating your palace, leading an expedition into the jungle to look for a lost Mayan city, or leading your armed forces on a raid of the rebels' base - that could be a lot of fun. Highly detailed graphics wouldn't be necessary, you could even have Roger Rabbit style toon characters.

Tropico 3: One of the best PC games
Tropico 3 is a unique game that all PC gamers, hardcore or casual must play. If you haven't read any synopsis yet, Tropico is a game where you become dictator of a small island and must manage said island. You must deal with politics, manage the economy, kiss up to either the U.S. or the Soviet Union, build an infrastructure, and crush any pesky uprisings. As of yet, the game has run without any troubles. No bugs to worry about. The game is quite nice-looking, but can be toned down for those using less powerful PCs.The T rating to be honest is a little harsh. Yes, there are battles during uprisings, but those are rather tame. The tobacco and alcohol are brought up for either economic factors or other very minor factors of the game. This game is excellent and and provides hours of fun. How many hours rest on the decision of how long you want to play it. As long as you want to build hotels and banana plantations, manage some squabbling political factions, or listen to some nice Caribbean music playing (It never gets tiring to listen to) interrupted by a hilarious radio broadcast, Tropico 3 has it.So in short, this game is excellent for any PC owner, and I would recommend it very highly.

Great game with one maddening fault...
Have been a fan of 'Tropico' for years and love this version. Lots of new buildings and the graphics are very good. But it absolutely drives me nuts that I every time I start this game, I have to enter the 25 character product key, or code, to start playing. And that's EVERY time. The game is loaded on a laptop that I never go on-line with, and it's totally unconscionable that the software developers would it make it mandatory that I have to manually enter in this code to start the game. I could understand it if I was going on-line to play others, but that's not the case. For that reason, I can only give it 4 stars. Once you enter in the code, that should unlock the game so you can play it any time you want.

Enjoyable game but somewhat monotonous after a bit.
I've played all of the Tropico games and Tropico3 has excellent graphics and is a beautiful game. However after a while it gets very predictable even before playing through all the scenarios. One thing I definitely dislike about the game is the fact that it seems designed to make you struggle for cash no matter what you do or how you play. (Frankly, I get enough of that in real life.) It seems that expenses are sometimes set to drain the treasury no matter what one does. That is not fun in my book.I'm glad I didn't pay full price for the game but for what I did pay it is worth many hours of amusement, I just think game play could have been improved to match the beautiful graphics. The Gold Edition is a good buy for those who like these kinds of games.

Love, love, love it
If you like the Tropico series, or dream one day of ruling your own island, this is a great game. You chose what resources to develop, deal with the politics local and international, and spend your budget as to your priorities - and hope not the get voted off the island - literally- or overrun by the US, Russia, or rebals. There are many campaigns were you are given a set of problems to overcome. These are great for learning how to rule, but are not your only option. You can become an infamouse dictator, or customize your characteristics and then chose the size, physical attributes, and natural resources of your island, and then chose the difficulty level. So there is never an end to the variety of game play. I would have been completely happy if I had not payed Tropico 4 which refined the process. My advice - buy the game and start ruling.

Sims with attitude
This simulation game takes you through the Cold War era in charge of a small island. You have to deal with rebels, environmentalists and other pests, and keep your people happy. It can be done, and you can have people "taken care of" who make trouble for you. You can zoom in on them and watch it happen. Try it.If I have to complain about something, it's the music. It's very annoying after a while so I had to mute it.
