This is the 2nd time ‘the glue has failed’ on my mirror glass, the last time was drivers side about 3 years ago. Replaced using this seller and still perfect. This time was passenger side so I had no issue buying from these again. Fitted and working in minutes at a fraction. Of dealer costs and installation charges. I would have given 5 stars but passenger mirror glass appears to distort images very slightly but is fully functional and acceptable at the price.

Wing mirror glasses falling off golfs seems a common problem , as my online searches revealed. 5 years is about the normal for this to occur. On my Mk7 it was 6. Seems the endless cycles of heating and cooling eventually causes the glue to fail, ergo the glass drops off. You can just replace the glass and save a few quid but you will need meticulous preparation and a high quality, temperature resistant contact adhesive (See U tube ). If you don’t have a suitable glue the cost of getting it will more than wipe out any saving on buying the glass alone. There is plenty of choice online but amongst reviews you will find evidence of units with combined glass and backing plates not quite fitting properly. I compared my backing plate with the photo of this unit and it looked pretty good..With the unit in hand I can confirm that the match is indeed very good. The heating element is patterned differently and there’s a small raised flat square of plastic at the pointy end next to the mounting point for the small metal tang that you will need to transfer from the original backing plate. You will see a small tab on this tang which is there to keep the tang in place. A small jewellers screwdriver slipped under the base releases the tab so you can slide the tang our. All that’s left to do then is to slide the tang into the new plate, reconnect the two heating wires, position the plate and tang and press to secure. I found this didn’t take a lot of pressure at all, which worried me a little as there are a number of click fitments connecting the plate to the plastic motor boss in the mirror housing. But it lines up nicely and it’s stayed put so far. There’s only one spoiler and that is the slow heat up. After an overnight frost with semi thawed frost on both wing mirrors I found that the drivers mirror had cleared within 1/2 a mile. The new mirror still had some water droplets remaining after 2 miles. Bearing in mind that this pattern replacement costs probably a 1/4 of an original VW part I can live with the trade off.
