Great compact printer for basic tasks at an excellent price.
First off, the "What's in the Box" blurb on the page that I ordered from was incorrect: the printer does not come with a CD or a USB cable. It does come with the two necessary ink cartridges: one for color and one for black. That said, the CD is really not necessary, and I purchased a USB cable from Amazon for $8.99 which was delivered the next day. Setup was simple, following the very clear and easy instructions. Going online to 123.hp.com gets you to the software download, accomplished quickly in simple steps. I opted out of the automatic ink option, since this is a printer that will not be used frequently. After the connections and setup were done, the single test page printed, in color, very quickly. I also printed a page that was simply text - it printed very quickly (less than 5 seconds from hitting the "print" option on the app). There is a recent review as of this writing that complains that the printing is very slow, but I would guess that is a local software or connection problem, and not a problem with the printer, unless the unit is defective in some way. All in all very pleased with the footprint (it sits with room to spare on a 20" X 10" side table top), ease of use, functionality, quality, and value. Update 7-18-2023: Still a good, compact, reliable printer for light use and basic tasks. But I have it directly connected and dedicated to a single desktop computer, so I can't comment on the WiFi issues. I must modify my initial statement about how quickly it prints text - my first pages were MS-Word documents, and it worked flawlessly and fast. Printing text from PDF files is much slower, about 45 to 60 seconds per page. So not a printer I would recommend for high volume PDF file printing.

WORKS WELL ONCE YOU GET IT CONNECTED TO THE WIFI, AND IF NOT WIFI DIRECT WORKS WELL.
NOT THE EASIEST TO CONNECT TO MY WIFI, BUT YOUTUBE HELPED WITH THAT. THE INK ISNT SUPER EXPENSIVE WHEN YOU GET THE HP INSTANT INK. I LOVE THAT I CAN WIFI DIRECT WHAT I WANNA PRINT AND ITS SO MUCH EASIER THEN TRYING TO SGN INTO EVERYTHING. THE PICTURE QUALITY IS GREAT.

A Month or Two and You'll Wish You Didn't Buy It
I purchased this printer because it was small and the technology seemed solid. Also, the cost of the cartridges on my old printer were more expensive than the purchase price of this printer, so I bought it. Actually, despite the inconveniences, I bought another for a friend a few months later. Two mistakes. Set up was amazing easy. Two ink cartridges, wow! Printed great the first few times. Then came the issues: 1. Would go off line intermittently. Considering my laptop, modem, and router are in a 2 feet radius, not acceptable. 2. Sending a print job would sometimes work. Sort of like it got selective on when it would print. A job that I sent might take 3-5 minutes to print the first page. Spooling should never take that long, especially when it's just one page of perhaps 100 words. 3. Scanning is great. No real issues there. Last time I printed was in Feb, so here, Apr 04, I went to print again. After an hour of resets and trying to clean the printheads through the app HP has, nothing. Wouldn't even finish cleaning the printheads. Got stuck in a loop twice. Did the chat with HP Service, and they were no help. All I wanted was to know how to clean the printheads. Simple? Yes. Unanswerable? Yes again. I reset the printer again an lo and behold, a page came out perfectly! It was the Printer Information Page that tells me all about my printer. Fantastic! So I went to run my single page print job. Print was intermittent. Say what? Did it again. Printer Info page, perfect, print job horrible. Cleaned the heads with alcohol. Better, not perfect. But at least I can read most of it. The second printer that I bought had similar issues, all related to the print quality. New cartridges, used once and then later in the day, says they are out of ink. C'mon now. My friend didn't tell me about this until the past weekend. Definitely cannot recommend. One bad printer is a fluke. Two is a pattern.

I purchased this printer and it works just fine. Some reviews on amazon and a few other websites claim that the setup for this printer is "impossible". Either these people are completely inept at computers or they have a defective item. Many claim the instructions are too hard so I will do my best to explain it here. First off It requires you to install from the CD, so it's not plug and play. Once you have plugged the printer into your computer and turned it on, you will then need to install the ink cartridges. Open up the front panel that has the HP logo on it. The ink cartridge head should automatically reposition itself for you so you can install the cartridges. (Make sure the printer is turned ON when you do this). After you have done that you will need to install the drivers from the CD that is included. (or you can download the software online) Once you do that you're almost done. It will ask to install not really necessary software like to make calender's and other things. you can choose to not install that. I recommend then opening up the HP deskjet 3700 series software and click on "Manage Your Printer" and print a diagnostic page. If everything is aligned and there is no streaks on the page as the test say's then you're done. You can now start using your printer. I did a diagnostic print myself and everything was perfect nothing else was needed on my part. Printer prints fine and it prints pretty fast over all. The only "con" of this machine is that the paper feeder is at the top of the printer. It would save more room with people who have full on computer desks if the paper feeder was on the bottom in a slot.

Perfect printer! It’s so easy to use and it’s compact so doesn’t take up too much space. I was worried about set up as some of the reviews mentioned it was hard, but I had nothing to worry about it was super easy! As long as you’re decent with technology you shouldn’t have a problem. The scanning was easy too. Also I love that you can print and scan documents directly from your phone as well. 10/10 would recommend this printer to anyone I don’t have a bad thing to say about it.

Let me preface this by saying I'm a pretty tech-savvy person. I don't usually need to use manuals when it comes to things like printers or other computer peripheral devices, because usually they're very simple and easy to sort out on their own. But setting up the wireless connection on this printer (as well as the HP Instant Ink feature) was a lot more painful than it should have been. I think most of my issues were a result of this printer only being able to connect to 2.4GHz wifi networks - it cannot connect to 5GHz wifi networks. Luckily I have a router that broadcasts both types. Next, none of the connection instructions worked for me - following the instructions in the manual did not work. I had to watch several videos and even then, those instructions didn't seem to work either. Finally, I had to download some sort of "Printer Doctor" software from the HP website and I had to plug the printer into my computer with a printer cable, and only then could I connect to the printer. On top of all this, the next time I turned on the printer, I had to go through the ENTIRE PROCESS all over again because it was like my computer forgot the printer - it was still listed in my printer devices section, but had the "Offline" status and was not able to print. So now I just leave the printer on (I think it goes into a power-saving/standby mode after awhile) so that hopefully I don't have to repeat all this again. But aside from these issues, the printer itself works well when connected and the print quality is great. Hopefully you have better luck connecting it than I did, because it really is a great printer!

While I can appreciate how lightweight and compact this unit is, this is literally the WORST printer I've ever bought. Printing takes forever and scanning can only be done one page at a time. Connecting the printer to WIFI was an absolute atrocity and it just barely worked when connecting it to my computer directly via USB. I thought I might just not be able to figure out technology (cue midlife crisis), but the tech support that remoted into my laptop couldn't even figure it out. The printer was showing as ready, but the drivers would always show as unavailable, despite uninstalling and reinstalling both driver and printer on my laptop MULTIPLE times and having it connected to my laptop via USB (we'd given up on wireless connection completely by that point). I ended up fighting with it for an entire two days before caving and buying a Canon Pixma all-in-one. It took me all of two minutes and zero aspirin to set up. I have returned this product and will likely never buy another HP printer again. Don't let the price fool you; this printer is absolute trash.

The printer portion of it is pretty straight forward and quality is decent. The ink does dry up quite fast, so don't count on getting the full alotted pages unless you use it consistently in a short period of time. The scanner portion of this printer is terrible, the feed is reverse from printing and often does not work properly. When it takes the feed, it does not go straight so you end up with a crooked image. Not really that great of a scanner but as a printer it is ok.
