Baofeng UV-5G Radio had problems
The first radio UV 9-G had numerous problems. The least was an antenna which fit tight. Other problems were, could not connect to radio with factory software to program radio or turn off scanning on unwanted stations. (Radio would scan Noaa channels which could not be turned off.)The replacement radio has better fit on the antenna. Rebecca B (Echo) @ Sharkoo did a great job helping get things moving and the replacement to me in quick order! The factory software still will not all access to program, however I have found software @ a cost to me for programming and turning off unwanted station scans. The radio has a nice fit to the hand, the sound is good and has 128 channels.Still evaluating power output and reception.I'm sure it will serve well.JtDiver.

Rugged GMRS radio
This is a typical Baofeng radio and this is neither good nor bad. The menus are a little quirky, but navigating the menus on this radio is no different than any of their other radios once you are used to them.Out of the box it worked just fine to interact with some old Uniden GMRS radios I already had. I didn't bother to program the CTCSS tones ("privacy" tones in Uniden parlance), but was able to easily program the radio using CHIRP. There are multiple cross references for CTCSS tones to Privacy Tones, just search for it online. The NOAA channels are a weird smattering of settings across the 7 frequencies the agency transmits on. You can tune into any of the NOAA channels, but the radio comes with 11 channels. I adjusted these to align with the same channel numbers that our weather radio uses and all is well. This is best corrected with CHIRP.Overall very happy with this radio and plan get more for our family to use around the homestead, on the road with other family members, and as we go out and about. The only complaint I have about them is the belt clip. I wish the clip was solidly mounted to the body like the UV-5R radios rather than this swingy button thing, but this is a minor gripe for an otherwise solid radio.
