A Well Made Replacement For The Old IKEA Detolf Cabinet
This is the Detolf cabinet that IKEA discontinued offered at a higher price. I’ve purchased twelve Detolfs over the last thirty, or so, years, and still use them all. Most were less than $70 or $80, with the last few about $130, if I remember correctly.TLDR: This is a reasonably well-made cabinet that takes two people, and a bit of patience to assemble. It does offer an attractive option for displaying art objects or tchotchkes (small decorative objects). There are no obstructions to hide what you place on the glass shelves, making this an excellent way to display your treasures while keeping them free of dust, and the grasping fingers of tiny hands. While those who’ve purchased a Detolf unit will recognize it immediately, there are a few improvements:The directions are much clearer. The finish on the threaded metal frames is much improved over the last series of Detolf I purchased a few years ago. This makes screwing on the top and bottom nuts that hold the cabinet together much easier.NOTE: Be sure when screwing in the nuts onto the metal frame to refrain from tightening the top four fully until you’ve installed the glass door. If you fail to do so, you may find it hard to slide the door into its top anchor. The plastic guides that hold the cabinet’s three glass panes together before you secure them are also of better construction, making this part of the assembly process much smoother and easier. The four bottom feet are adjustable which is something the old Detolf version did not have. But, it’s not that easy to make adjustments once the cabinet’s assembled.Included with the three glass shelves are clear flexible plastic edge strips you can cut to fit the outside shelf edges. This keeps each glass shelf from colliding with the cabinet’s glass sides, and potentially chipping an edge or surface. It’s a nice addition, and I plan to pick up some clear automobile door edge guards, and cut them to fit the shelves on my other Detolf cabinets.Unlike Detolf, instead of opening the glass door using a latch at the top of the door, this unit included a special latch you can attach anywhere on the door edge itself. Placing it somewhere near the vertical center of the door’s edge puts less stress on the magnetic closures at the top and bottom of the door.Unlike the old Detolf, this cabinet comes in one heavy (80+ lbs) package. Although the packaging itself does a good job of protecting the materials inside, it is a bear to move around. It took two delivery people to get it into my garage, and I had to open the package, and it took several trips to bring all the pieces inside. You always want to assemble this cabinet as close as possible to where you plan to use it. Once put together, moving it about can stress the glass panes causing them to crack.Downsides:There were a few horizonal half inch scratches on the edge of the glass door. These are not too noticeable, but if they’d been elsewhere, they might have been a bother.Unlike Detolf, the cabinet does not have a hole for wiring either in the wooden/particle board top or bottom. So, you’re going to have to use a drill if you want to install lighting.Be sure to follow the instructions on installing the magnetic fasteners that latch the glass door. The directions want you to do this prior to assembling the cabinet, and it turns out the fasteners are a very tight fit, requiring you to use a hammer tapping on a screwdriver or punch to push them into the base and top.Included with the cabinet are four plastic anchors, four zips ties, and enough screws to attach a pair of fasteners to the cabinet, and another pair to the wall. Supposedly, securing these fasteners to each other via zip ties will keep the cabinet from crashing down on top of a child, or pet. This is a case of something being better than nothing, but I think a lot of people won’t use them because they’re so unattractive. One final tip: there are grooves cut into the top and bottom base of the cabinet where you fit the top and bottom edges of the glass panes. The cuts go through the surface of each, and right into the particle board wood beneath. This leaves a light colored, coarse edge you might find unattractive. To avoid having this, consider picking up a marker with close to the same color as the base, and using it to fill in the light-colored grooves before assembling the cabinet.Summary:Well made, properly packaged, and—with two people—pretty easy to put together. Having to drill holes for lighting is a pain, and I hope they fix that in later versions.

Must have glass case for any hobby enthusiast.
These cabinets are amazing. I have a set of original IKEA Detolf's and I was disappointed when they were discontinued. I thought that these cabinets were exact matches for the Detolf from the instructional video on the page which shows the IKEA style and based my decision on what I saw there. These are not the old style and the instructional video they use won't help anyone who purchases this. I put it together regardless and after setting them up I was definitely impressed. The floating effect the brackets give each shelf looks amazing. The glass panes are crystal clear. My only one complaint is the door knob. It can be a little detracting from the clean lines and crystal clear glass. Its not enough of an issue for me to knock my rating. The delivery was fast and each part was in pristine condition. They really put a lot of effort into the shipping quality. I could tell each piece was carefully positioned for packaging.Building was pretty straight forward, a little sketchy before you get the first bracket in, but once it is, it becomes pretty easy.

Too flimsy
Really cheap materials, instructions are ridiculous, glass had some scratches.Door doesn't fit with the bottom and top stopper, the whole thing is too flimsy and weak. The plastic corners aren too loose the side glass will pop out in both sides, I have to glue it and reinforce with silicone and make some modifications to the door hardware to make it fit.I just recommended to no buy this item.

Directions are Awful
so overall, the product is a good value. It does suit the needs for which we intended. Putting it together took 2-3 people (at times) and several hours. It could have been done in less than half that time - now that we know how to do it! We basically had to put it together blindly. You may want to have a cocktail standing by to calm your nerves.

Instructions Could’ve Been Better
Overall it’s a solid product for the given price. It was packaged well & arrived without any issues. The instructions however, didn’t say much & you kind of had to mess around with it. On the door, I found that having both metal tabs (top & bottom) didn’t allow for it to close so I removed the bottom one. Overall I love it & it’ll be great to display my game consoles.
