Dog is 40 pounds. Strap broke in the first few weeks.Also I don't like the automatic (one press and it is locked) locking mechanism. And if you try to lock when the dog is lunging (5 months old Portie), it tends to give a loud rattle and not lock.Case is opening up a little too.I have yet to find a good quality retractable lead.EDIT: I upgraded from one to three stars because the seller contacted me and offered either a replacement or refund, after clarifying the problem I had. I will give a 5 star feedback to that seller.

Don't remember reading that the leash is either in the locked position or the retractable state. My last one allowed me to hold down the locked button, release by lifting my thumb, and repeat until my dog was brought in closer to me. This device you can hold down the log button but then you must click another button to release it to retract the lead. It's a difficult process to get your dog in closer quickly; otherwise appears in great quality.

I purchased this leash because it had a longer cord than most of the others. As mentioned in other views, the leash makes noise when it is extended. Although mentioned in the description, I also did not like that the button locks when you press it, whereas some of the others allow you to press the button without it locking. I purchased the leash knowing all of this from other reviews, but I didn't think it would matter. Unfortunately it did, thus the three stars.

I've used this leash for about 2 weeks with a small dog. The black ribbon is not durable at all. If your dog occasionally puts the ribbon in his mouth, or runs around a bush, the ribbon will fray and come apart, that was my experience. My point is, the ribbon is very lightweight and doesn't hold-up. I'm surprised there were so many good reviews which lead me to buy this in the first place. On the plus side, the plastic case and retracting system seemed to work well, no problems there.

This is a great leash. Tough and strong with a beautiful gold finish. Well beautiful until my mutt went tearing down the driveway dragging it behind him a few times after pulling it out of my hand. It has gone through some rough treatment it is scratched, and pitted but still works fine. When this one eventually is trashed I will be sure to purchase another. Because this thing is tough and pretty if you can keep it that way.

I was very disappointed that on just the 4th time using one of the two I had bought, the hook book off the leash and my dog was all of a sudden running loose. I had to try and tie the leash onto the tiny loop at the bottom of the latch in order to get him home. Unfortunately, with that small opening, it did not hold and I was left to walking him while bent over and holding his collar. I have never had this happen before and I could see by the small amount of stitching in the leash, that it is a matter of time before my second one comes loose as well.

Works as expected, but the sound of the leash going in and out is loud. I've had several different brands and this one is the loudest.
