9/32 vs. 5/8
The sketch currently shown as a product photo by Amazon (see my own pic) is accurate for what I received -- a 9/32 spindle is the largest it will accommodate. The product title ("9/32 in. & 5/16 in.") is contradictory and wrong. This worked fine for me, as reviewers had already pointed it out and 9/32 was what I needed. In fact it was a tight 9/32. With a digital caliper, my spindle measured a rather small 9/32. Even at that, the spindle had to be tapped into the socket with a hammer. That was fine, metal was soft. After a few taps in and out, I had a good fit. The latch itself is well designed and well manufactured, works smoothly. Would buy it again.

Works to retrofit antique hardware on modern doors.
I found a bunch of old porcelain knobs and mortise plates in my father's shed after he passed away last year. I tucked them away thinking that I'd make a coat hanger or craft with them. I purchased a home this summer with old dated and dinged up brass knobs from the early 1990s and decided to try to retrofit my dad's door hardware to replace them. I tried to reuse the existing strikes and they sort of worked, but had a lot of wobble in the knob. I accidentally found these Prime line strikes looking for a different piece of door hardware. They looked promising and the price was great, so I ordered two to see if they would work. Surprisingly they did. My old square shank pin slid right through the center. I didn't have to file like other reviewers did but I was prepared to do so. Out of curiosity I tried a threaded pin in the Prime line shaft and it would not work, so I would not recommend this with that type of knob shank. The only reason that I gave this a 4 star review instead of 5 was because of the size of the catch itself. It's definitely smaller than a typical door latch but does line up in the strike plate correctly. This works well for old mortise hardware on a newer cylinder bored door.

For older house locks
Well made and fits many old & antique door latches & locks. Not the easiest to find, but this one, looks and works well. It is well made and attractively carded & an extra one is now hanging in my shop.

Does not fit a true 5/16 spindle
This is a really sturdy piece, but it absolutely does not fit a 5/16 spindle. I purchased one of these to try it out on my antique door handles, but I couldn't begin to get the spindle to go through. The latch is slightly smaller than 5/16, so my spindle wouldn't go through and there isn't anyway to enlarge the hole unfortunately. I imagine that back in the 30's when the spindles were made they were true 5/16 the same way a 2x4 was a true 2x4 and today it is not. Very disappointed this didn't work out and it's back to the drawing board.

If you are installing like for like in size, it should be an easy process. Recommend!
I was very pleased with this item and it was fortunate that it fit perfectly in the empty/former space of previous hardware from the early 1900s. Just what I needed and recommend this item and seller 100%.

I went out on a limb with this purchase not knowing for sure if these would actually fit on my old custom pine doors. Well they did work and are great quality. Will buy again if needed.
