stunning insight into the benefits of therapy from a human perspective
I loved this book. It has helped my on my own therapy journey and in my journey to become a therapist. It’s a great mix of:- fiction, hearing the stories of the patients is gripping,- therapy knowledge, learning about different theories and techniques through her descriptions of real-life examples- autobiography, hearing her own life story intertwine with it all.It surmounts to a wonderfully written, funny, eloquent, personable and relatable read. I learnt so much, and got a lot of personal insights from it.

Life lessons written with vulnerability and care
I bought this book when I was going through a tough time. The reviews looked great, although I must say I was sceptical about how many fervent positive comments there were about the book; surely it cannot be THAT life changing. It was 6 months before I started to read it, but I'm glad I picked it when I did, the stories and knowledge and experience in the book came at just the right time.I LOVED the book. It was written so so beautifully. Gottlieb is an excellent writer, the way she manages to create intricate plots out of people's life stories and hooks you in is simply fantastic.I have qualms with non-fiction books which use jargon and have a narrative voice that gives off "better than thou" energy. So I was happy that this book shared so much professional expertise in an easy to understand way and with a tone that was warming and approachable.I must say I read the book quickly, wanting to know what happens next. However, there were so many beautiful and striking quotes, I shall be re-reading it and noting these down with care so I can refer back to these again and again.I really do recommend this book, in fact I have to the people in my life, passing the book around.I think in many ways, if you are struggling, you may see yourself reflected in her stories and in her patients' stories and you might just find yourself in a position to change your life.

Excellent read
Thought provoking interesting novel. This book sticks to the reality of therapy or counselling with admirable honesty and authenticity. I felt touched by Lori Gottlieb's handling of sensitive or difficult feelings in her own therapy and her work with her patients. A sort of courageous risk, in my opinion well worth taking and excellently crafted. As a U.K counsellor I learned from this novel but also just enjoyed the story too. A real pleasure to read. Thank you.

Funny, relatable, insightful
I would call myself a bit of a psychology nerd and while I normally tend to find self-help type books can be very generic and lack depth, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and learning about personality flaws through the author and her patients. The unique angle of hearing stories about therapy from both sides is very refreshing and makes for a good and informative read, not quite as dry as previous books and not as obnoxious either (self-love gym? Come on…) because a lot of the advice is hidden in storytelling and is much more easily digestible that way but still gets the point across. Thumbs up and up!

You must read!
Oh my goodness this book made me feel every emotion. I laughed, I cried, I felt nervous and I couldn’t put it down. The chapters felt so relatable and it was so interesting to hear about therapy from a therapists side. Dying for another book to come out!

Engaging read..
This is a good read and very accessible. Lori Gottlieb writes in a very readable way about her own clients and about being a client too. She’s very likeable, and anyone who has ever been in therapy will relate to it
